Here are some considerations if you’re thinking of installing a place to swim.

Few things can add such instant beauty and appeal to a backyard as a well-conceived swimming pool or water feature. Film and television are full of examples where a sparkling pool is presented as a symbol of luxury and status. You may be well aware that a pool doesn’t necessarily offer the best return on investment in a home resale, still a beautiful water feature can bring some value in terms of desirability. Moreover, it’s hard to argue with the enjoyment of a pool on a hot summer day. Pool parties are still fun, so here are some considerations if you’re thinking of installing a place to swim.

Why a Pool?

First, consider why you are adding a swimming hole to your property. Do you have a family that will spend significant time enjoying it when weather permits? Does your neighborhood lack a facility where you can stay in shape swimming laps such as a community center or a gym? Perhaps you’re a backyard enthusiast who takes pride in having an outdoor space that is the envy of the neighborhood. For most people, purchasing a pool isn’t like deciding what’s for dinner. You should make sure you know what you really want and can afford. Look for a pool concept that is going to make the most of your outdoor space for years to come. Avoid including elements that won’t get much use. If you want a pool primarily for exercise, you should probably skip a water slide.

What Kind of Pool?

Unless you have specific reasons, you should probably avoid installing an above-ground pool, which is usually cheap, unattractive and not as durable as an in-ground option. For an in-ground pool, reach out to an expert builder of custom pools Prosper, TX to see what options are available and recommended for your space. The type of container that your pool will sit in is a big consideration. Containers are usually made of concrete, vinyl or fiberglass. There are advantages and disadvantages with each. Concrete containers can be built to almost any shape, but they are usually the most expensive. They are prone to chips, cracks and algae/bacteria, requiring considerable maintenance. Vinyl is less expensive, but can tear requiring complete replacement. Fiberglass containers are low-maintenance, but you’ll need to do your research as the quality can vary significantly.

How Much Will It Really Cost?

It’s easy to ignore the true cost of putting a pool in your yard. Don’t be swayed by the upfront cost of installation. You’ll need to consider longer term maintenance costs which would include filtering systems, cleaning and heating. Remember to think about the auxiliary costs such as covers, skimmers, decking, ladders, steps, rails, lighting and other amenities such as diving boards. Local laws may also require erecting fencing and additional safety features. Then there’s also the potential increase in required homeowner insurance coverage. The presence of a pool will also affect your property value and your property taxes, by extension.

What About the Details?

If you’re going to go through with getting the pool, pay careful attention to the terms of your contract and warranty with the installer. A pool warranty usually covers structural items, operational and maintenance equipment (e.g. filters, pumps, heaters etc.) and the workmanship of materials. Before signing anything, make sure you understood what is and isn’t covered and by whom in a warranty. Some items will be covered by the manufacturer, while others are covered by the seller. In the event that something goes wrong, who would you call? As you entertain bids for the job, ask for a blank warranty and go over it with each potential builder.

Getting in a morning or evening workout at your own private pool is great. On a hot day, cooling off with a swim is one of life’s great pleasures. A beautiful, sparkling pool adds so much visual appeal to an outdoor space, but don’t be so enchanted with the idea that you don’t carefully consider the initial and long-term expenses associated with responsible ownership. Thorough and careful planning at every step of the process will help you minimize the chance of a pool from becoming a nightmare.
