When we look for a home, one of things we want is to have good roofing above our heads. This may have been true in the past but with the numerous choices available it becomes more and more difficult to know what type of roof to put in. Even with the help of professional roofers it is still a daunting task. There are many things to consider when choosing a roofing material. It could depend on how the roof is sloped, how heavy the material, or how durable said material is, to name a few. Here are four roof types and with their pros and cons.

1. Asphalt Shingles

Generally asphalt shingles can either be organic or fibreglass. Under organic it is composed of a mixture of asphalt, ceramic, and paper. The fibreglass on the other hand a glass fiber mat that is coated by both asphalt and waterproof filler.

Pro: Asphalt comes in different varieties and is very durable. It also has a long warranty. Compared to other type it is cheaper but the organic type is cheaper than the fiber one.

Con: The material is vulnerable to sudden changes in temperature which can result to warping of the shingles. This material therefore is better used in colder climates as it can increase durability.

2. Wood Shingles

Unlike asphalt shingles, wood shingles give you’re a house a sort of rustic feel. This is often taken from pine trees and thus become more beautiful as time passes.

Pro: Like asphalt shingles, wood shingles are durable and carry long warranties from 30 to 50 years. They are also beautiful to look at.

Con: The wood needs to be cut in the correct manner otherwise it would ruin it. Because of this the material is more expensive and with the precision required with the installation then it becomes even more expensive.

3. Metal

Metal roofing is generally composed of galvanized steel, stainless steel, copper or aluminium. The most common is corrugated iron.

Pro: This material is considered the most durable among all the materials. It is also resistant to most weather and can even resist fire. If properly maintained, metal roofing can last for a very long time.

Con: While it is cheap in developed countries, depending on the type, it can be very expensive as well. It is also not pleasing to look at compared to other materials.

4.Clay Tile

Still made using traditional methods, it also often made using sand and concrete. It comes in different styles and it is easy to use geometric designs. When put on the roof it makes the house give it a Spanish feel.

Pro: This type of material is very durable. Unlike asphalt tiles, clay tiles are better in warmer climates. It is also resistant to rot and even insect damage.

Con: Aside from being expensive, clay tiles are also very heavy. This means that you may need to renovate your house to add the needed structural support. You will also need to have roof repair every 10 years or so but not for the tiles but instead for the underlaying material. It can also break easily when additional weight is put on it like professional roofers doing renovations.
