Compared to most appliances in our house (including washing machines and stoves), we have no reason to physically look at and operate our hot water heaters to take advantage of the benefits they offer. This is why our water heaters often go unnoticed, until they stop functioning.

Hot water systems Brisbane owner Charlie McCarthy understands that homeowners consider hot water as a vital part of their comfortable living space, but they hardly interact with their heaters except when bringing down the temperature if it is set too high. This essential device that is usually taken for granted becomes the center of our attention the moment it is broken.

Introducing the 5 types of water heaters

Waking up every morning to a freezing shower is not a pleasant experience. If your water heater breaks down, you will want to resolve his issue in the most affordable and speedy way possible. The ideal water heater for your house demands that you do some research, just like any other major home investment. Here are the types of water heaters you can have installed at home:

Conventional storage water heater

Considered the most common home water heating system, these tanks hold anywhere between 20 to 80 gallons of water. The top of the tank releases hot water, and is replenished by cold water underneath. While these devices provide you with a supply of hot water all the time, they could waste energy even if they are not running through standby heat loss.

Since the tank works to have a constant reservoir of water, clean it at least every 6 months) to lengthen its lifespan and reduce corrosion from minerals and sediments. Your conventional storage water heater will still function without maintenance, but it may stop working sooner than the average 12 year lifespan.

Demand-type or tankless water heater

This instant water heater releases hot water when you need it. When cold water goes in the device, it is quickly heated up by an electric element or gas burner. Unlike conventional heaters, there is no standby heat loss since there is no inactive preheated water present. But tankless water heaters only hold anywhere between 2 to 5 gallons of water per minute, which will be a problem if several of your home appliances need hot water at the same time.

It may be difficult to clean your demand-type water heater because its smaller components are not easy to access, but maintaining it at least annually to take away minerals and prevent corrosion will help it last from 8 years to a decade.

Hybrid water heater (Heat pump water heater)

Instead of using electricity to generate heat, this unique unit heats water with the warmth in the air. Electricity mainly transfers this air-heated heat to the water, making heat pump water heaters more energy efficient compared to other products in this list.

Hybrid water heaters have tanks. Just like the conventional models, it is best to clean the tanks at least every 6 months to keep them working well.

Solar water heater

As the name suggests, this device uses solar panels mounted on the roof of the house as an energy source. This power is delivered to a closed loop system with a heat-conductive material that warms up the water in the tank. This product is perfect for those living in sunny climates (who will also save money on electricity bills since sunlight is free), but there should be a backup heater for those cloudy days.

Aside from cleaning the tank often, the solar panels also have to be maintained from time to time.

Indirect and tankless coil water heater

Tankless coil heaters warm water via a coil or heat exchange, so they are mostly effective in cooler climates. Indirect water heaters use a boiler or furnace to diffuse the heated liquid through the heat exchanger, and hot water can be stored inside a tank, lowering energy costs.

This type of water heater is considered low maintenance, as it only has a few parts.

What hot water system is best for your home?

The right water heater for your living space in Brisbane is basically the product that suits your needs. The system will be the correct size to offer you and your family with the comforts of hot water on demand. The time and money invested you will invest in this device will fit in your budget, and will help you bring your power bills down.
