What is an EOP and Why is It Growing?

The EOP serves as an anchor for the nuchal ligament, which connects neck muscles to the skull. Prolonged screen time, often in a hunched posture with the neck craning forward, increases pressure on this area. Over time, the body compensates by lengthening the EOP, a process observed through X-rays. This growth, sometimes referred to as a "phone bump" or even "horns," appears to be more common in young people, particularly males. Shahar and Sayers hypothesize that the habitual use of devices is to blame for this skeletal adaptation.

Their study examined X-rays of people aged 18 to 86 and found that young individuals, especially men, were more likely to develop larger EOPs. In 2016, they reported that 67% of men in a test group had pronounced EOPs, compared to 20% of women. By 2018, after expanding their sample size to 1,200 participants, they found males were five times more likely to exhibit this characteristic.

How Common is This Phenomenon?

Shahar and Sayers’ research examined X-rays of individuals aged 18 to 86, initially finding that 67% of young men and 20% of young women had pronounced EOPs. Subsequent studies involving over 1,200 people revealed that men were five times more likely to exhibit this skeletal adaptation. This adds to other technology-related conditions like text thumb or thumb arthritis, where overuse of devices strains the hands.

However, their findings have not gone unchallenged. Critics argue that elongated EOPs have been documented for centuries and are not unique to the tech era. Some archaeologists point out that these bone growths are especially common in males, even in pre-digital times. The report has been accused of over-interpreting the data, leading to sensational claims that lack conclusive evidence.

Ergonomic Adjustments: Use stands or holders to bring screens to eye level, reducing the need to crane the neck forward.

Regular Breaks: Take frequent breaks from screen time to stretch and move.

Strengthening Exercises: Incorporate exercises to strengthen neck and upper back muscles, improving posture and reducing strain.

While the jury is still out on whether technology is giving us "devil horns," the study raises an important point about the need for balance in our tech-driven lives. Encouraging healthier habits, like taking regular breaks from screens and maintaining proper posture, could mitigate some of the risks.

As archaeologists and scientists continue to explore this phenomenon, one thing is certain: the relationship between technology and human biology is complex and worth further investigation.
