The Apple Watch Series 7 maintains the same design from its launch, with the characteristic rounded sides and a larger, brighter display. Contrary to speculation, there has been no change to the original design.

The Apple Watch has developed over time to become a device focused on health and fitness, though there are still some social elements. Each new version has had various noteworthy additions, though this particular model is more incremental in comparison to earlier models.

Apple Watch Series 7 Features

The Apple Watch Series 7 is the peak of Apple's wearable revolution, acting as the ultimate representation of what can be achieved in a wrist-worn device. It is the epitome of Apple's vision for the future of wearables.

Although a redesign may be possible in the future, for now Apple had to weigh up what modifications it could make to an ageing design without sacrificing existing features.

Apple has released a new Apple Watch that is compatible with all watch bands. Since its launch, the Apple Watch has been known for its fashion-forward design, which is evident in the various watch band styles.

Display

Apple pushed the display over the edge of the Apple Watch frame for 20% more screen real estate than its predecessor. Those upgrading from the Apple Watch Series 3 will see a 50% increase in display size while only increasing case size by 3mm.

The always-on display is 70% brighter when dimmed, making information easier to see even in bright settings.

Apple have reconfigured many of their apps to take advantage of the larger display. The Calculator has bigger buttons, text messages show more content, and a full-sized keyboard is available for swipe typing.

Apple claims that the display of the Apple Watch Series 7 is the most resilient to date, with its glass shield being thicker at its peak, providing additional protection against cracks.

Health

The Apple Watch Series 7 does not offer any new health features; the same health features which were available on the Series 6 remain available, although the Series 6 is no longer part of Apple's product lineup.

Heart

The Heart rate is a key indicator of overall health and fitness. The Apple Watch's infrared sensor takes regular readings and stores them in the Health app for easy tracking.

Using the Digital Crown and heart rate sensor, users can manually take Electrocardiograms. This measurement can help detect irregular heart rhythms, assisting users in deciding if a doctor's visit is necessary.

The built-in blood oxygen sensor in the sensor stack uses LEDs and photodiodes to measure oxygen levels and alert users when it falls below a certain level for their elevation. This data can be used to identify possible lung or health issues.

Fall Detection

Apple Watch's accelerometers can detect if the wearer has experienced a fall or collision. If enabled, it will prompt the user if they require help after such an incident.

If no movement is detected for around a minute, an alarm will start counting down. With the Apple Watch connected to cellular network or an iPhone, it will alert emergency services in case of incapacity.

By default, this feature is activated for those 55 or older, but it can be manually enabled for those 18 or over.

Other

The Apple Watch will track sound levels in any situation, and with its setting enabled, it can alert the wearer of noise that is too loud. Additionally, a complication is available so users can quickly view the noise level.

When Apple Watch senses that its user is washing their hands, a twenty-second timer will begin. This feature was added during the pandemic to promote good hygiene.

The Apple Watch monitors sleeping patterns automatically. When you wear it to bed, it utilizes the health sensors to measure the quality of your sleep.

Fitness

The Apple Watch has made fitness a key part of its offering, with Fitness+ tailored to suit. From walking to swimming, tracking your workouts is just a tap away.

As Apple update their algorithms with watchOS 8, users now benefit from improved automatic workout detection. This is made possible through a combination of sensors which can detect cycling exercises and start them automatically.

The algorithms have been adjusted to accurately measure calories when using an e-bike. They can distinguish between pedal-assist and when the bike is being propelled solely by the rider's leg power.

The Fitness app on Apple Watch offers a variety of workouts for users to initiate, such as cycling, swimming, core, HIT, and even hiking. With the release of watchOS 8, users can now access additional workouts like pilates and yoga.

Processor, Networking, Charging

Apple claims the Apple Watch Series 7 has the same 18-hour battery life as the previous model, but the charging speeds have been accelerated significantly.

The Apple Watch can be charged 33% quicker when connected to an adequate source of power, which translates to eight hours of sleep tracking with only eight minutes of charging time. Apple has also stated that the battery can reach 80% capacity within a short period of 45 minutes.

Apple did not provide details on the processor, but the new S7 System-in-Package (SiP) features the same core processor as the S6. However, there are more components to the SiP than just the processor. The improved display, fall detection, and other capabilities make the S7 a next-generation package.

The Apple Watch still offers LTE connectivity, which requires a cellular plan from a carrier. This may be included in your iPhone plan for an additional fee each month.

Materials and Colors

The Apple Watch Series 7 comes in aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium. The aluminum model is the only one with new color choices.

The colors for aluminum are midnight, starlight, green, blue, and (PRODUCT)RED. Silver, graphite, and gold are the hues for stainless steel. Titanium stays with its traditional space black and titanium shades.

Apple Watch Compared

Apple Watch Series 7 versus Apple Watch Series 6

Existing Series 6 Apple Watch owners may find it hard to determine if upgrading to the 2021 version is worthwhile, since the processor and features are not significantly different. Nevertheless, the improved display could be the deciding factor.

The display is now 20% bigger, measuring 41mm and 45mm, with the bezels significantly reduced. Apple also states that the new display is slightly curved and thicker towards the center for improved shock protection. Furthermore, its dimmed mode is up to 70% brighter.

The Series 7 and Series 6 have identical health and fitness functions. All the features found in the Series 7 are also present in the Series 6, so no unexpected surprises. Battery life between the two models is the same, around 18 hours in normal use.

For those already possessing a Series 6 Apple Watch, there is no convincing argument to upgrade, given the new color options, sturdier display, and swift charging.

Apple Watch Series 7 Review: Bigger Than You Think

We believe the Apple Watch Series 7, with its larger display and curved glass, is the best smartwatch you can buy. Its bigger case and edge-to-edge display make it a compelling upgrade compared to its big-bezel predecessors, despite not containing a significant number of updates.

Apple has not included any new health sensors, processor speed enhancements, or cellular technology, as in earlier models. The battery life remains the same, however the charging time has been reduced thanks to the new cable.

Design

The design of the case is similar, but with slightly more curved edges and one speaker slit instead of two. The watch band connecting mechanism remains unchanged from previous models.

The display of the Apple Watch Series 6 is 20% bigger and 70% brighter when in always-on mode, a noticeable difference when compared side-by-side. This increase in size and brightness is the real story.

Apple made some tweaks to the OS to accommodate the larger screen. The QWERTY keyboard is straightforward to use with tapping each letter; however, it is most efficient when swipe typing. When we're in a hurry, we still prefer to use speech-to-text via Siri.

The latest models have introduced two new watch faces: Modular Duo, with its two large complications, and Contour, boasting a more distinct design with curved letters that extend beyond the glass. Both offer compelling choices to make a statement.

Using Apple Watch Series 7

Despite no improvements in speed to the processor, apps opened quickly and navigating the OS was seamless.

Thanks to 5W fast charging, the Apple Watch can charge up to 33% faster than earlier models. To take advantage of this, use the included cable with a 5W or higher charging port.

Same features for fitness tracking, heart rate monitoring and awards remain in the new model. Plus, users can take an ECG, set up emergency contacts in case of a fall and receive notifications for abnormal heart rate readings.

We put Apple's durability and dust-proof claims to the test by taking an Apple Watch Series 7 to the beach. After several drops in the sand dunes and being nearly buried in sand, there were no signs of damage.

We think that upgrading to the Apple Watch Series 7 is advantageous for all. Those who currently own the Apple Watch Series 6 may find it more challenging to make the switch, yet the larger display with more information makes it worthwhile.

Pros

  • Larger display
  • Two new watch faces
  • Full QWERTY keyboard
  • Faster charging
  • Very durable

Cons

  • No new health features
  • Processor is unchanged
  • No third-party watch faces

Score: 4.5 out of 5

What was Rumoured

Prior to the Apple event, much speculation surrounded the possibility of a major revamp. Rumours ranged from a flat-sided watch to different kinds of bands.

Apple's unveiled product proved to be the antithesis of pre-existing rumors. The Watch is not only curvier, but also retains the old band design and lacks any extraordinary, new features.

The rumour mill suffered a major setback when the expected features failed to materialize despite multiple sources being adamant about them.

The verdict is still out, however, as some have doubled down. Now those who perpetuated the flat-sided redesign say it is on the "Apple Watch Series 8" - 2022.

There have been rumours of a bigger Apple Watch, as well as a more rugged model, but nothing recent has indicated a complete redesign. With the upcoming Apple event just a few weeks away, it remains to be seen whether the rumours of a flat-sided redesign are true.
