If you’ve experienced back pain, you’re certainly not alone; back pain affects an estimated 80% of Americans at some point in their lives, and it causes around $50 billion in lost productivity every year. But back pain comes in many different forms, and there are many reasons why someone might experience it. In this guide, we’ll help you figure out the different reasons why you might be suffering from back pain so that you can find relief more quickly and efficiently.

1) Posture

Are you sitting at a desk for long periods of time? Your posture might be to blame for your low back pain. If you’re experiencing chronic lower back pain, make sure to use proper posture during your day-to-day activities. To avoid worsening or causing back pain in general, avoid slouching and instead try holding your head up high while sitting and standing.

2) Slouching

It’s widely believed that poor posture can cause back pain. Many office workers, for example, have developed an elongated spine due to constant time spent in front of a computer monitor. By addressing posture issues and preventing them from occurring, you may help alleviate or prevent back pain. If you already experience back pain, regularly exercising your core muscles will likely help improve your condition—so try out extension exercises for back pain or treatment for chronic back pain.

3) Sitting Too Long

Back pain during early pregnancy can be caused by sitting for long periods of time. Low back pain is often caused by your back being in an unnatural position for a period of time. Sitting too long is one of those positions that can cause pain.

4) An Active Lifestyle

If you have back pain, it’s important to stay active and continue moving throughout your day. In some cases, low-impact exercise can help people with back pain recover faster. For example, if you participate in yoga or Pilates regularly, don’t let your back condition keep you from a healthy practice. Walking is another great way to help relieve back pain while still staying active and on your feet throughout the day.

5) Genetics

If you’re genetically predisposed to back pain, you may have a hard time escaping its clutches. Specifically, if your parents or grandparents suffer from back problems and/or had any of your vertebrae removed surgically during childhood, chances are you might develop low back pain as well.

6) Injury

Sometimes back pain is an indicator of a serious injury that should be dealt with immediately. For example, if you feel sudden and intense pain in your back while exercising, stop exercising right away. If you can’t identify what caused your pain, schedule an appointment with a chiropractor or physical therapist who can provide direction specific exercises for low back pain (stretching, strengthening) and how to fix low back pain.

7) Degenerative Disk Disease

Despite their name, degenerative disk diseases (DDD) are actually not very common. DDD is a condition where a person’s disks start to deteriorate and collapse. When some or all of your intervertebral disks start to deteriorate, they can pinch one of your spinal nerves resulting in pain.

8) Osteoporosis

Aging is one of many factors that can lead to low bone density, known as osteoporosis. A patient experience is an important component of managing back pain in patients with osteoporosis because it allows your body to adjust more quickly and properly to your back treatment. Keeping a food journal, particularly during low-impact exercise periods like recovery days, will also allow you to take note of any worsening symptoms or cravings. Lastly, keeping a consistent bedtime routine can help reduce night-time back pain by minimizing your daily activity. It’s recommended that adults sleep between seven and nine hours per night; most adults get less than that! Be sure to go to bed at roughly the same time every night—including weekends—to keep a solid routine going.
