The diabetes capital of the globe is allegedly India. With roughly 50 million Indians suffering with diabetes, the nation faces significant obstacles. Let's first discuss what diabetes is. Diabetes is a condition marked by increased blood sugar levels. A person develops diabetes for two main reasons: first, when their body stops making insulin, and second, when their body does not react to the insulin that is created by their body. The body converts insulin into energy, which is then delivered to the cells. Type I diabetes and Type II diabetes are the two kinds of the disease. Let's learn a little bit more about them.

Type I diabetes

Type I diabetes usually occurs in people who are below the age 20 and that is why it is also called as juvenile diabetes. In this type, the body becomes partially or completely unable to produce insulin. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease. In this, your immune system attacks the pancreas from where the insulin is produced, thereby making the pancreas inefficient or unable to produce insulin. Type I diabetes cannot be prevented, it can only be controlled with healthy lifestyle changes.

Type II diabetes

In India, Type II diabetes is more prevalent than Type I diabetes. Persons over 40 are more likely than younger people to develop type II diabetes. Insulin resistance is the underlying cause of this form of diabetes. In this instance, the body is unable to adequately utilise the insulin that the pancreas generates. Type II diabetes may be caused by a variety of factors. Being overweight, having high blood pressure, eating poorly, being overly stressed, having hormone imbalances, using certain drugs, and living a sedentary lifestyle are a few of the causes. Nevertheless, type II diabetes is reversible.

There are some foods which can negatively impact your diabetes. So, the first thing you need to do is to remove these foods from your diet

1. Refined sugar - Everyone is aware that sugar, unless it is consumed in its natural state, is dangerous for diabetics. When ingested, refined sugar causes a sharp rise in blood sugar. Even natural sugars like honey may produce a sharp rise in blood sugar levels. So, if you have diabetes, it is best to avoid refined sugar at all costs.

2. Whole grains - It is best to stay away from grains that contain gluten. Diabetes and gluten are linked because eating gluten can result in a leaky gut, which can cause inflammation and, eventually, autoimmune diseases.

3. Alcohol - Alcohol consumption is directly related to diabetes. Alcohol not only damages your liver but also attacks the pancreas that produces insulin. Diabetes is linked with consumption of heavy alcohol which is two to three glasses a day. Beer should especially be avoided as it has a lot of carbohydrates.

GMO foods - GMO foods have the capability to promote diabetes along with causing liver and kidney diseases. Go for products which are labeled as GMO-free.

What to eat and do

1 - Cinnamon

A bioactive component found in cinnamon has the potential to combat and prevent diabetes. It is well known that cinnamon increases insulin action, which lowers blood sugar levels. Like too much of anything is harmful, too much cinnamon can raise the risk of liver damage since it contains a substance called coumarin. It is safer to own genuine cinnamon rather than Cassia cinnamon, which is the type sold in stores.

2 - Aloe vera

Aloe vera is widely available in Indian homes. Even though it has a bitter flavour, mixing it with buttermilk improves the flavour. Aloe vera is typically used in cosmetic products, but because it has anti-inflammatory characteristics, it can also treat wounds. It has anti-inflammatory qualities and is thought to regulate blood sugar levels.

3 - Jamun

Jamun and its leaves have proven to be helpful in lowering the blood sugar levels. Consuming approximately 100 grams of Jamun every day is said to show tremendous improvement in your blood sugar levels.

4 - Vitamin C

Vitamin C benefits diabetes as well as the skin. According to recent research, taking 600 mg of vitamin C daily can considerably lower blood sugar levels. People with long-term diabetes should regularly eat foods high in vitamin C. Orange, tomato, amla, and blueberry are a few examples of foods high in vitamin C.
