In this article we will discuss the major demon to speed reading, how to improve your speed reading almost instantly, and other things which hinder speed reading and how to correct them. Finally I'll give you some specific tips you can use that will not only improve your speed reading instantly, but will continue aiding you to become even faster with more practice.

There is one thing that slows down reading more than anything else -- subvocalization. Subvocalization is where you sound out every syllable of every word. Speed readers have learned how to identify and comprehend words without having to sound them out. There are a lot of techniques to do this, and some of them are pretty advanced. I will give you a very basic technique which should almost double your speed reading skills within a week.

First, you must learn how to widen your eye span. Before you begin to read, make a conscious decision to become more aware of what you see. Next, instead of looking at words individually, look at them in sets of three or four words. Then try to identify the phrases visually, instead of by sounding out each syllable.

Maybe you can only do this with two or three words at the time at first. But if you practice enough, you'll be able to do this with whole lines.

Besides avoiding subvocalization, you can do a lot of things to improve your speed reading that have nothing to do with technique. You need to create a favorable reading environment. Dim lighting won't do. Make sure you have adequate lighting, and that you're in a comfortable position to read.

Also, if you are tense you will read slower. Do some relaxation before you begin to read. The looser you are, the better your eye span will be to group words, and also the more focused you will be.

This brings us to our next point -- never re-read a passage. Most people think that if they go back and re-read certain parts, it improves their comprehension. This is true only if there is sufficient time between reading a passage and re-reading it. This will not be effective in a single reading session. It is much more effective just to continue reading, and never go back and re-read anything in one sitting.

Not only will you find that you read faster, you also find your comprehension will improve. Since you know you can't turn back, you will become more focused on digesting what you are reading currently, and you'll pay more attention to the reading material.

I have given you just the basic fundamentals of speed reading. But these are the building blocks for every technique you will learn if you're serious about continuing education speed-reading. Just practice expanding your eye span to recognize groups of words, always read in favorable conditions, and loosen up and focus more, and you'll likely find your reading speed will double in a few short days.
