What exactly is an MLM?

There is no simple way to define a multi-level marketing (MLM) business. People in MLMs may refer to it as direct selling or network marketing. An MLM is typically a vast organisation made up of hundreds of people selling stuff and services such as beauty products, candles, cleaning products, and books from the comfort of their own homes.

Three characteristics clearly distinguish an MLM:

  • 1. To join the MLM and become a distributor, you must purchase a beginning package. The kit will include some of the things you'll offer, catalogues you can use to display potential clients, and the cost of a personalised website.
  • 2. You'll make money by convincing others to sign up as vendors and buy a starter kit. These are referred to as your 'downline' recruits.
  • 3. You will also be paid a commission on sales. If you conduct your MLM recruitment technique well, you usually earn some money as well.

MLM merchants frequently use social media platforms such as Facebook to reach out to potential consumers. Alternatively, they may throw 'parties' either online via Facebook or Instagram Live, or in person, with the goal of showcasing and selling their wares.

Is an MLM a legitimate way to make money?

It may be tempting to join an MLM in order to supplement your income. You might also look at it as a stepping stone to beginning your own business.

However, making money with an MLM is difficult. Consider the following:

  • How much does it cost to join an MLM? (this might involve purchasing a pricey starter kit or purchasing stock upfront)
  • How much you must sell in order to recoup the cost of your starter kit
  • How much do you have to sell in a month to begin earning commission?
  • How much time do you need to work to get that commission? Is your hourly wage even close to the minimum?
  • If there is a certain amount you must sell each month in order to be an MLM representative.
  • How much does it cost buyers to buy the products? Would you consider them excellent value if you were a smart consumer? Or would you seek out more cost-effective alternatives?
  • How many individuals in your region are already representatives of the same MLM? If you have a lot of competitors in your location, it may be difficult to market your products.
  • Do you need to hire more employees in order to make more money?
  • Are you willing to consistently pester your friends and family to buy your items or join your MLM? Will you have to make bold statements that haven't been validated scientifically?

Before you start, you should be practical about how much money you can generate and how much time you will need to devote to it.

It could be beneficial to speak with someone you recognize who used to be a member of an MLM. You could also join a Facebook support group for ex MLM members.

You might also ask your MLM recruiter these questions, but keep in mind that they will benefit if they are able to sign you up for the MLM, so you may not get completely honest answers.

Be wary of any MLM that makes exaggerated claims about 'becoming rich quick.' If something appears to be too good to be true, it most likely is.

You should also think about how it will affect your connections with friends and family, especially if they will be the majority of your customers.

Network Marketing Vs Pyramid Scheme

Presently, people wrongly think that MLM or Multi-level Marketing is an illegal activity and you should not support it.

In fact, Network Marketing is a legal business to maximise sales by reaching products to the customers through a network of channels.

Then why it is considered an illegal business?

Because of the existence of the Pyramid Scheme, which is similar to Multi-level Marketing, people wrongly say that MLM is illegal.

Pyramid schemes are against the law. A pyramid scheme does not provide a product or service. Instead, the only way to generate money is to bring in new participants to the plan. It means that the vast majority of people who participate in a pyramid scam will lose money. Only those at the very top of the 'pyramid' will profit.

A reputable MLM will sell a real product and it should be able to make some money (albeit not necessarily much) without needing to attract people to the MLM. However, in many MLMs, it is far more profitable to recruit people than it is to make sales commission.

Do not Join Pyramid Scheme Instead of MLM

Please step away from the Pyramid scheme companies not to get harmed by the misleading activities.

You can find whether a company is Pyramid Scheme or not by learning the following steps.

  • Find the vision and mission of the company.
  • Take their past activities. Top MLM Companies will always follow their utmost vision and mission.
  • Find out their products. If they are not dealing with any products, it will be a pyramid company.
  • Check the quality of products. Before joining MLM, you need to check the quality of products. A good MLM company keep their quality standards at a higher level.

As I conclude, I want to say again that you should be very careful in order to make money from Multi-level Marketing.
