As someone who has been writing in hopes of building a career for over three years, I have composed a list of why creative writing is a wonderful and rewarding job. If you're a creative writer here on Vocal, I applaud you for choosing such a lovely career! If you're reading this as a non-creative writer, I still applaud you for opening this page to read my list. Thank you!

The list is pretty general, as creative writing is a broad term. So, take my reasons as you will.

Anyway, here is the list you came for!

1. Generally, you can work on your own hours.

Creative writing is a very flexible career. That's why so many people enjoy it. If you want to write a story, write a story. If you want to write a poem, write a poem. The sudden and potentially unpredictable nature of creative writing is great for people like me who do things on a whim.

2. There is a lot of opportunity, not just financially.

Creative writing gives a lot of opportunities for connections and gives you a direct path to being recognized. Although it may not seem direct at times, the limitless nature of this career welcomes anyone who can pick up a pencil or type on a computer, making it really easy to keep going.

Creative writing is fantastic in this way because you get so many opportunities within creative writing to become successful. Not all writers are rich, but these opportunities extend so far beyond money that taking these opportunities can be a major change in one writer's career.

3. It can pay well.

Whatever path you take in creative writing, nearly all of them pay well. Entering contests, writing books and selling scripts are just a handful of examples. Making money as a creative writer tends to be easily accessible and straightforward if you have an idea of what to do and stay persistent.

There are both things you can take action doing such as contests and creating a blog, and proposals you can engage in like freelance job posts. Both pay generously, and what you prefer depends on your experience and schedule.

4. There is a lot to do, and different routes to take.

As mentioned previously, creative writing is a vast umbrella term. It means so many things, from article writing to journalism to story writing to script writing and beyond. No two creative writers are the same, and that's the beauty in being creative.

Creative writing has no path to follow that's set in stone. It's yours to shape and work with. The flexibility of this career is what makes it so enticing and fun. A job where you can do nearly whatever you want, whenever you want is truly something magical, and that describes the average creative writer.

5. Good news about your work is exciting.

Of course, good news about anything usually makes someone happy. But when you put your heart and soul into writing a story and then watch your story grow into a success, it's really something simply indescribable.

Writers are extremely familiar with how much work it takes to transform an idea into a full piece. So, approval for this piece and an understanding of how much effort it is always feels super important.

Now that I've finished this list, I wanted to say that this isn't made to sugarcoat the career and say that writing is total sparkles and confetti and things always go right. No career is perfect. But being a creative writer comes with so many benefits that it's just nice to enjoy sometimes.

If you're a creative writer facing some of the more difficult aspects, I hope this list brought you some optimism, because every point comes from a place of hope and experience.
