Why Are Writers Expected To Do So Much Self-Promotion?

The Writer's Double Duty: Unraveling the Mystery of Self-Promotion

By Elise L. BlakePublished about a year ago 3 min read

Whether an author is looking to self-publish their novel or seek publication through traditional means, there will be the expectation of self-promotion. Social media and especially the rise of the obsession known as #BookTok, authors are excepted to promote their work now more than ever relying on virality and hype from online fans to push book sales.

I've only recently joined TikTok @barbara.king.author and it's been quite the learning experience on self-promotion.

But why is it that authors are expected to self-promote their work even with the traditional means of publishing?

Changing Landscape of Publishing

The world is filled with more writers now than there were ever before and this change, with its rise in the many self-publishing platforms, has led to increases competition making it hard for traditional publishing to keep up with the demand. Traditionally published writers have to pick up where these companies can not reach and self-publishers have to reach everywhere they can, both parties taking a more active form in marketing and promoting their books to reach their target audience.

Building A Personal Brand and Connecting with Readers

In the age of social media and online platforms, selling a book is no longer just selling a book, but selling the writer and the book. With the rise of book sales being influenced by social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok readers are expecting a face to go with their books and a more personal connection than just seeing the book in their local bookstore.

Self-promotion allows writers, traditionally or self-publishing to directly connect with their readers, building a community relationship.

The Power of the Author Platform

Agents, publishers, and even readers often consider an author's platform when evaluating a book. I've personally never internet searched an author before buying a book, but it's a trend with growing popularity nowadays.

For those looking to traditionally publish their work, it's a good time to get started on your online presence, including a website, blog, social media presence, and email list. Some publishers need to know that you have the potential to attract an audience to pick up the slack where the vast competition might have them lacking in the marketing department.

Empowering Writers

While self-promotion online may seem daunting, it also empowers writers to take control of their writing careers. By actively promoting their work, writers can bypass the gatekeepers, have creative autonomy, and build a sustainable and fulfilling writing journey on their terms.

---

I'm sad to say that being a writer is more than just writing, but the community I have begun to grow on these social media platforms has given me a feeling of community among readers, and support amongst writers.

Go out and start building your online presence, but most of all -

Keep writing.

With love,

B. King xo xo
