Who Is Marie381UK? The Story of George’s Girl

The woman behind more than 4,000 poems

I feel a bit daft writing something about myself. Blowing my own trumpet has never come naturally to me, and part of me wondered whether people might think, “Who does she think she is?”

But lately, people have been asking who Marie381UK—or Marie 381 UK—really is. So I decided it was time to tell my story and explain why I will always call myself George’s Girl.

Marie381UK is far from new to poetry. She has been writing for many years, quietly creating thousands of poems and developing a voice that could belong to nobody else. Her writing has grown deeper, stronger and more imaginative, but the heart behind it has always remained the same.

Marie was born in Earlestown, Newton-le-Willows. Her beloved dad, George Hurst, came from Old Road in Ashton-in-Makerfield.

George was very good at drawing, and he taught Marie much of what she knows about art. He encouraged her to draw, write and believe in her imagination, even when she did not believe in herself.

Because Marie’s mam struggled with her nerves and was ill for much of her life, George became both dad and mam to his children. He cared for his family, held everything together and gave them the love and security they needed.

To Marie, he was not only her dad. He was her best friend.

She loved him to the ends of the earth and back, and her life has never been the same since he died.

George loved everything Marie wrote or drew—even the pieces she now laughs about and calls rubbish. To him, none of it was rubbish because his daughter had created it. He saw something special in her long before the rest of the world began discovering her work.

George loved all three of his children—Marie, Dorothy and John—equally. They each carry their own memories of him, and they all still miss their dad.

Calling herself “George’s Girl” is therefore much more than a name. It is Marie’s way of carrying her dad’s love, encouragement and memory into everything she creates.

Today, Marie381UK has written more than 4,000 poems. Some are funny, peculiar and wonderfully strange. Others explore love, loss, family, memories and the hidden thoughts people sometimes struggle to express.

You never quite know where one of her poems will take you, but that is part of their magic.

Readers have described her poetry as phenomenal, captivating and impossible to stop reading. Many have said that Marie is not simply a poet—she is a natural storyteller.

Her poems contain characters, unexpected turns and endings that can make you laugh, cry or sit quietly thinking long after the final line.

Marie does not use complicated language just to sound clever. She writes from the heart, using her own voice, her own grammar and her own wonderfully unusual imagination.

Her work feels honest because it is honest.

It is a style that cannot be copied, because it has been shaped by her life, her memories and the people she has loved.
