"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Gandhi.

Volunteering yourself is the simplest way to celebrate volunteers on Volunteer Recognition Day. Too busy? Remember to give a volunteer your gratitude and support their cause.

Some people are cynics who believe that genuine altruism is a myth, nonexistent, and that people are only capable of acting in their own self-interest in the end.

Even the most resentful cynics would struggle to explain why anyone in their right mind would choose to go to the world's poorest regions to assist in the care of orphaned children, where disease, famine, and conflict wreak havoc on the populace and death is as inevitable as life.

Or why a well-to-do middle-class person would decide to dedicate their afternoons to teaching neglected youngsters how to read in the most impoverished and violent area of the community? Or why any nurse would put their life in danger to treat injured soldiers directly from the front lines.

Though they vary widely in appearance, volunteers are the world's true saints and superheroes. And while they don't seek for compensation for all of their unselfish labor, Volunteer Recognition Day is all about showing them how much we respect and value them.

The origins of Volunteer Recognition Day

There have been people for hundreds of thousands of years who have put their own safety at danger to aid others and who don't expect anything in return. One of the founding fathers of the United States of America, Benjamin Franklin, also established the first volunteer fire department, which assisted in putting out numerous fires in Philadelphia.

When Florence Nightingale provided treatment for the injured during the Crimean War, she was hailed as the "mother of modern nursing," her hero status was equal to that of any soldier engaged in combat. Famous mystery writer Agatha Christie served as a volunteer nurse in the Red Cross Hospital's Voluntary Aid Detachment in Torquay from 1914 to 1917 while her spouse Archie was engaged in combat in World War I.

The majority of the life of the Catholic nun Mother Theresa of Calcutta was dedicated to providing care for people afflicted with leprosy, TB, and HIV/AIDS in India. More lately, a number of Hollywood celebrities, including Angelina Jolie, have traveled extensively to many underdeveloped regions of the world in an effort to learn about the issues faced by the locals and discover solutions. The world has been eternally altered for the better by each of these individuals and countless others.

How to observe the day of volunteer recognition

There are numerous ways to commemorate those who have devoted significant portions of their lives to aiding the underprivileged that society has forgotten about on this day. Finding a way to assist someone is the ideal option; nonetheless, this does not imply that you should give up all and relocate to a developing nation.

No matter where you live, there are people in your neighborhood who have been dealt a lousy hand in life and who are in need of basic necessities like a hot meal, clothing, a roof over their heads, or even just a little love and care. This isn't limited to people however; animal shelters are constantly overflowing with lone creatures in need of a companion.

Thus, pick a subject that is really dear to your heart and dedicate this day to serving others. It's likely that the experience will be far more fulfilling than any pay could possibly be.
