Two Fields Medals. One Global Superstar. One Nobody Noticed.
Why Wang Hong became a household name while Deng Yu vanished — and what that says about all of us.

When the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians announced its awardees, two very different information densities appeared across Chinese social media and news platforms. Wang Hong’s name landed on the front pages of virtually every major outlet, from state television to provincial evening papers. Her life story was dissected into dozens of short video clips. Deng Yu, a fellow laureate, barely entered public conversation beyond a few specialized mathematics WeChat public accounts.
This is not a matter of academic merit. It is a consequence of two fundamentally different communication vectors.
I. The “Describability” Gap of the Problem Itself
Wang Hong proved the 3D Kakeya conjecture. The conjecture has a widely circulated lay version: “What is the minimum volume swept by a thin needle rotating freely in space?” This metaphor, borrowed from harmonic analysis textbooks, was adopted directly by the media. Any reader without a mathematical background could form a mental image. News stories could then write: “From the needle’s rotation, she glimpsed the secrets of high-dimensional space.”
Deng Yu’s work focuses on a narrow solution to Hilbert’s sixth problem. The problem requires rigorously deriving macroscopic fluid dynamics equations from microscopic statistical mechanics models. Its core is mathematical axiomatization; there is no everyday object to serve as an analogy. In popular science reporting, editors can only pile up terms like “partial differential equations” and “dynamic limits.” Readers scroll past after the headline.
The first fork in the communication chain is simply whether the problem permits translation into common sense.
II. Scarcity in Historical Coordinates
Since its inception in 1936, the Fields Medal has been awarded to 69 mathematicians. Sixty-six are men, three are women. The first two female laureates appeared in 2014 (Maryam Mirzakhani) and 2022 (Maryna Viazovska). Wang Hong is the third, and the first Chinese female recipient.
This timeline itself sets the news rhythm: a female winner appears roughly every eight years, each occurrence triggering a global media cycle. Male winners, by contrast, appear in multiple numbers every cycle, and the public has long grown accustomed to their presence. Deng Yu is the “first Chinese male Fields Medalist,” but the “first Chinese” angle was already covered by Wang Hong, who also carries the additional coordinate of gender. In editorial meetings, the latter is far more likely to be framed as a “breakthrough” narrative.
III. Contrasting Life-Story Material
In Wang Hong’s public biography, one passage is repeatedly quoted: “Born in the mountainous region of Guilin, Guangxi, she did homework on a vegetable patch as a child, failed to make the provincial team in the preliminary math Olympiad, and later entered Peking University.” This narrative contains geographic disparity, an against-the-odds trajectory, and the classic theme of education transforming destiny. Multiple media outlets sent reporters to her hometown village, filming the muddy road she walked to school.
Deng Yu’s resume follows a different template: undergraduate at Peking University, doctoral studies at a top overseas institution, supervised by a leading authority in the field, and a tenured research position immediately after graduation. The entire path is seamless, without ruptures or reversals. To write his story, journalists can only recycle phrases like “prodigy” and “straight-A golden path” that have long lost novelty. Algorithmic recommendation systems allocate little traffic to texts lacking emotional volatility, so even when such reports are published, they rarely reach the average user’s feed.
IV. The Anchor Point in Public Memory
Human memory favors “the first” and “the only” far more than “one of many.” Before Wang Hong, the public’s anchor for female Fields medalists was Mirzakhani, whose early death in 2017 added to her legend. The eight-year interval makes female laureates a “predictable spectacle,” with media preparing special features ahead of time. Wang Hong fell precisely into that rhythm.
Deng Yu, however, sits in a crowded sequence. Over the past ninety years, the list of male recipients includes many names vaguely familiar to the public (such as Terence Tao and Grigori Perelman). New male faces join every cycle, making it difficult for any single individual to stand out. Deng’s proof is extraordinarily difficult, but it lacks a “handle” that non-specialists can grasp. He solved neither a problem that can be stated in one sentence nor a problem accompanied by a dramatic life anecdote.
V. Back to the Desk
As of July 2026, Wang Hong’s award-lecture video on YouTube had surpassed 500,000 views; Deng Yu’s comparable video had about 8,000. Yet on the mathematics preprint server arXiv, their paper downloads over the past two years differ by less than 20%, and their citation trajectories are nearly parallel.
Communicative heat is a projection of the external world. It favors perceivable differences, retellable stories, and relatable identities. But mathematics’ final verdict never consults these criteria. In the official Fields Medal citation, both laureates received the same length of justification, both worded as “for solving a long-standing important problem.” That statement mentions neither gender, nor hometown, nor which road was muddier.
On Wang Hong’s desk sits a stone she brought from that vegetable patch in Guilin. On Deng Yu’s desk rests a stack of manuscript pages covered in derivations. Each faces the next unsolved problem, and that problem does not care how many cameras are watching.
