A lot of talk and research has been put up on the internet what with the recent pandemic, the reprieve, and the second wave. The biggest thing that we have all learned as a society is that it is indeed possible to not only work from home, but can thrive within those conditions.

Working from home up until this year has always been the dream goal to most. We want to be our own boss and work at our own pace. In most cases, we can be more productive on our own than in a work environment for those whose personalities fit.

So what should we know about a successful work from home environment?

Getting up at a consistent time. (We all have an internal clock)

Having consistency is just an overall theme in general. You should have a general consistency when working from home in order to make the most of your experience and to better plan out your life.

We all have an internal alarm clock. There are just regular times when you consistently wake up. Where you feel tired. Where you know you start to lag. It is a traceable pattern.

The first step is to know that pattern and work around that. In other words. . .

Scheduling your life and creating a routine. (What a smooth transition)

We all need schedules. Ugh. I know! In high school creating schedules was the worst possible thing that could be done in my opinion. I HATED them!

Coming into college I needed a different mindset. Now that I have school, a part time job, a YouTube channel, and a writing platform I just could not ignore the fact that I needed to schedule.

Now for me I love lists. To-do lists are very motivational. I have bought what is called a chaos calendar from amazon (Chaos Coordinator) and it has been a lifesaver. You are able to write everything that you need to do for the day, then there is a place for priorities.

Priority lists are a good way to keep you both on track with the items in the day that absolutely could not be pushed to a later date, and it is a manageable list and shows in your mind that you did above and beyond what you had set out to do.

Have a routine. (All of the essentials)

Create a morning routine for yourself. Wake up, brush your hair, brush your teeth, get your breakfast, change into working clothes, maybe even work out.

This particular point is important. When days meld into each other and you have no idea what the date, time, or meaning of life is and you just have no motivation, routine can keep you going through the day (even if it is on autopilot).

Unfortunately, the work is still there.

I have no doubt that there will be many instances where you do not feel like working. Nothing about working is ever 100% easy or even enjoyable. It needs to get done though. We need to make sure that we are there and ready when life decides to get us to notice the work that needs to be done.

The best way to focus out your routine is on the previous day schedule out a way to use timers or block your schedule.

Set timers or block your time. (We all need to take our time, relax)

Working from home is harder than it sounds because there are always distractions. The phones, the TV, the bed, the chores, the promise of being able to just sit on the couch. There are so many things that can be said in that respect.

However work must be done. There does need to be a scheduled out period of time that will be dedicated for it.

No one is telling you to not take breaks. If we are doing one thing for hours and hours on end we are not always going to do it to the best of our ability. It is OK to take care of other things and to give your mind a break.

Therefore, help yourself. Allow yourself to block out time to do something else, whether it be another task or simply allowing yourself to breathe. It is imperative that you do not overwork your mind on one thing so mental breaks are rather important.

Create a workspace. (Yes a designated work space just for you and your work)

This tip may be a little harder to put into practice as not everyone has a lot of space, some may have kids or roommates, but this is imperative. You need to have your own space so that you can have a clear head space and a mindset that there is nothing else but work.

You need to trick your mind that you are not at home, there are no other distractions, and it is crunch time. It would also be prudent to keep your workspace neat and tidy. All that is in the space should be solely for your work alone to not make for distractions.

I hope you enjoyed these starting tips for working from home. These are just some things worth thinking on and that have helped me in my career.
