Switching a job is not easy. There are numerous things that need to be taken care of. Even if you land in a new job, it doesn't mean you do not have any responsibility towards your previous employer. It is necessary that you fulfill all your duties and abide by the terms of the contract that you have signed with your previous employer.

Don't resign without having a confirmation.

Switching a job can be a difficult decision to make. Most individuals make the mistake of resigning from their current job without having a proper confirmation. So don't make the mistake of resigning unless you have the offer letter. Other than that, you must also make sure that all the clauses in the letter confer with what has been already discussed. If that is not the case, it is well within your rights to reject the offer.

Read the new offer carefully.

You might be overwhelmed with the new job offer that you've received but make sure you read it carefully. Try to understand every clause bit-by-bit and also make sure you fully understand the compensation. The reason for that is, compensation is usually mentioned in CTC, which is cost to the company. Many people believe it to be the actual salary, but that is not the case. It is the gross salary that you receive in the whole year. So, on paper you might see a higher compensation but the net salary or the actual in-hand salary might be far less.

Make sure you do serve the notice period.

Since you have decided to quit, your position is likely to be vacant. So it is your duty to serve the notice period until your employer finds someone to fill your shoes. You may also extend the notice period with a prior approval of your new employer in order to train the person filling in so that he/she completely understands your work portfolio.

Collect all the necessary documents.

Your new employer might demand your previous documents such as 'experience letter' or 'salary slip'. Employers usually demand these documents in order to cross-check it with the information that you have provided. So it is essential that you get those documents from your previous employer.

Part on good terms.

It might be tempting for you to bash your coworkers and your boss by writing a critical 'departure memo'. But it is advisable that you demonstrate professionalism by being kind and appreciative with those around you. Your colleagues and boss can be helpful for you in the future. They can offer you recommendations and advice that can be useful for you in your career. So make sure that you are generous while writing that memo without offending anyone. In addition to that, you can also specifically mention the names of your colleagues who shared a good rapport or did you a lot of favors.

Be in regular touch.

Importance of networking cannot be undermined. In the professional world, it is important to have contacts and the best people to establish strong contacts are your colleagues. So make sure you don't loose touch with them.

Switching a job can land you in trouble if you are reckless when it comes to following standard protocols. If certain things are not taken care of, can haunt you in the future. Even if you happen to miss a small detail, it can land you in trouble. So in order to have a hassle-free transition from one job to the other, it is advisable that you take into account the aforementioned factors.
