The Controversy of Legalizing Marijuana

Across the globe, the decriminalization and legalization of marijuana are gaining momentum. However, this shift towards acceptance raises questions about the potential risks and consequences. In the ongoing online debate, critics argue that the harmful aspects of marijuana are often understated. This article will explore the three most compelling arguments against legalizing marijuana.

Argument 1: Potency and Psychosis

In recent decades, marijuana has undergone significant genetic modifications, resulting in a far more potent product. The main psychoactive compound in marijuana, THC, has been found to be associated with an increased risk of psychosis, regardless of other contributing factors. Notably, marijuana also contains CBD, which appears to counteract these psychotropic effects. However, as growers have selectively bred marijuana to contain less CBD and higher levels of THC, its overall potency has surged.

Research suggests that the more potent marijuana is, and the greater the quantity consumed, the higher the risk of developing psychosis. Some argue that limiting access to marijuana could reduce the risk of marijuana-induced psychosis. Yet, the prohibition of marijuana may inadvertently lead to a stronger, more potent illegal market, similar to what occurred during alcohol prohibition in the United States. Legalization could enable regulators to ensure the presence of CBD in marijuana products, offering safer options for consumers.

Argument 2: Gateway Drug Theory

Critics argue that legalizing marijuana may lead to increased use of more dangerous drugs. Some studies indicate that a significant proportion of lifelong marijuana users have experimented with other illicit substances. However, it's essential to consider that the real gateway to drug use may be earlier in the form of cigarettes. Research shows that individuals who start smoking at a young age are more likely to use illegal drugs. Therefore, drug use is influenced by a combination of factors, and making more drugs legal does not necessarily lead to increased hard drug use.

Portugal's experience with drug decriminalization suggests that treating drug use as a health issue rather than a criminal offense can lead to significant improvements. Possession and use of all illegal drugs were decriminalized in Portugal, resulting in a decrease in drug use, hard drug-related problems, and overdoses.

Argument 3: Addiction and Health Concerns

Marijuana addiction, although primarily psychological, is a genuine concern. The demand for treatment for marijuana addiction has been on the rise. Higher THC levels have been linked to increased addiction rates. While some studies associate marijuana use with health issues such as increased blood pressure and lung problems, others have provided inconclusive results. The impact of marijuana on the developing brains of teenagers is also a subject of debate.

In perspective, research indicates that other legal substances, like alcohol and tobacco, have significant health risks and addiction potential. Legalization of these substances allows for regulation and control, particularly in restricting access to young people.

Conclusion:

Marijuana, like any other drug, is not without its negative consequences for a portion of its users. It is not a harmless substance. However, the best way to mitigate its negative effects on society appears to be through legalization and regulation. This approach allows for better control, research, and understanding of the potential harm it may cause. Ultimately, it is about taking responsibility for the risks associated with marijuana use rather than endorsing it outright.
