Sales, discounts, promotional codes... All this seems like a pleasant motivation to shop. But is it really so? Let’s check how the behavior of buyers changes in sales seasons.

Everyone loves shopping. But even if you are not a fan of shopping, you still have to shop. Well, such is life. But have you noticed how you shop? What do you pay attention to when shopping? And does your thinking change in any way when shopping during sales? Promocodius portal experts conducted a study on how the shopping model changes during sales.

What Usually Affects Buying Decisions?

Promotional codes can be very influential in a consumer’s buying decision. However, the Promocodius project manager, Alisa Sklyarova, noted that “the availability of promotional codes usually is not enough to make consumers decide to buy a product.” She explained that “retailers cannot make consumers buy a product with even a 90% discount if it is of no use to them, as the primary factor that influences any and every buying decision is the need factor.”

Without needing a particular product, the most attractive discounts would not make a consumer take a second look at it. This need might not be immediate or urgent; however, it is important that the consumer recognizes how a certain product can be of value to them at one point or another. But the situation changes in sales seasons.

What Happens In Sales Seasons?

If during ordinary shopping buyers pay more attention to the need factor, then during the sales season, buyers most often make rash purchases. According to Promocodius statistics, every second person on the planet at sales - especially at the end of November-December - starts an active search for promotional codes and uses at least one promotional code. During such periods, when making purchases, buyers prefer to pay attention not to the brand of the product, its quality or price, but to the size of the discount.

How Retailers Use Promo Codes To Drive Sales In Sales Seasons

Retailers significantly drive sales of different products in sales seasons, particularly through promotional codes. In what way?

Here’s the logic behind that. When discounts are attached to a product in high demand, certainly, consumers would run towards the product, looking forward to taking advantage of such a deal. Products in high demand are guaranteed to sell, even if the attached discounts are minimal, but that is not the case for the other product type.

And if the seller wants to sell an unpopular product, then he makes an even greater discount on it than on a popular in-demand product. With a probability of 87%, during sales, the client will buy exactly the cheapest product, even if it is less in demand at usual times. Thus, the best strategy for business during sales is to offer as many promotions, coupons, vouchers, and discounts as possible.

Conclusion: keep in mind the sales effect, once again ask yourself if you really need this thing. Doing so, you can protect yourself from rash purchases and use sales periods in the most rational and beneficial way for you.
