By LITHIKAPublished about a year ago 3 min read

India has had many Prime Ministers since its independence in 1947. Each Prime Minister has had their own achievements, challenges, and contributions to India's development and progress. Here are some notable works of some of the Prime Ministers of India:

1. Jawaharlal Nehru: As the first Prime Minister of independent India, Nehru played a pivotal role in shaping the country's future. His key works included developing India's democratic institutions, promoting secularism and social welfare, and leading the country through the difficult period of partition.

2. Lal Bahadur Shastri: Shastri was known for his simple living and high thinking. He introduced the famous slogan "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" which means "Hail the soldier, Hail the farmer" during the India-Pakistan war of 1965. He also introduced measures to promote food self-sufficiency in India.

3. Indira Gandhi: Indira Gandhi was the first woman Prime Minister of India and served two terms. During her tenure, she introduced several pro-poor policies such as nationalizing banks, reducing poverty and increasing access to education. She also played a crucial role in India's victory in the 1971 war with Pakistan which led to the creation of Bangladesh.

4. Rajiv Gandhi: Rajiv Gandhi was instrumental in introducing computerization in India and promoting economic liberalization. He also introduced policies aimed at promoting communal harmony and reducing religious tensions.

5. Atal Bihari Vajpayee: Vajpayee was known for his focus on infrastructure development and improving India's international relations. His government initiated several major infrastructure projects, including the Golden Quadrilateral highway project, and he also played a key role in improving India's relationship with the US.

6. Manmohan Singh: Singh is known for his role in liberalizing India's economy and opening up the country to foreign investment. During his tenure, India experienced rapid economic growth and became an increasingly important player in the global economy.

7. Narendra Modi, the current Prime Minister of India. He assumed office on May 26, 2014, and was re-elected for a second term in May 2019. Prior to becoming Prime Minister, he served as the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014.

Modi is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is known for his pro-business and pro-development policies. He has launched several initiatives to boost economic growth and modernize India's infrastructure, including the "Make in India" campaign to promote domestic manufacturing, the "Digital India" program to increase access to technology and the internet, and the "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" or "Clean India Mission" to improve sanitation and cleanliness.

Modi has also pursued an active foreign policy, seeking to strengthen India's ties with other countries and assert its presence on the global stage. He has emphasized the importance of India's relations with its neighbors, including China and Pakistan, and has sought to expand India's influence in the broader Indo-Pacific region.

Modi is known for his charismatic leadership style and his emphasis on economic development and modernization. During his time in office, he has implemented a number of ambitious reforms, such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which unified India's complex tax system, and the Digital India campaign, which aims to transform India into a digitally empowered society.

Modi has also pursued a more assertive foreign policy, seeking to position India as a major global player. He has worked to deepen India's ties with the United States and other major powers, while also seeking to balance relations with China and other regional powers.

Modi's leadership has been praised by some for his focus on economic growth and modernization, while others have criticized his government's handling of social and political issues, including religious tensions and freedom of speech. Regardless of one's opinions about Modi, he remains a significant figure in Indian politics and is likely to continue shaping the country's future for years to come.
