When I was a young man in my early 20s, my dream was to challenge myself as a cadet of Korea Air Force Academy and become a pilot, and my dream was thwarted due to poor math grades, but that dream has been transformed into a management pilot who takes off the company high as the CEO of a company.

When I traveled around the world as an overseas salesperson in my 30~40s, I still remember the tension and excitement at the time of take-off of the plane, but the speed at takeoff, the checklist during the flight, and the amount of fuel used are very similar to the challenging start-up process.

The Startup Journey

1. The Speed of Takeoff and Taxi Fuel

In the case of a large airliner, it is possible to take off at a speed of 270~350 km/h, which is called taxi fuel in technical terms. Due to the amount of fuel consumed in proportion to the speed of the plane, most of the fuel amount trip fuel is consumed before landing at the initial destination airfield.

2. Entrepreneurship Education at High School

A few years ago, for about a month and a half, a high school in Incheon created a corporate and management experience curriculum based on 'design thinking' and 'business modeling' among entrepreneurship theories. It was a time when I felt that our society needed the passion of education and the experience process of entrepreneurship education a little earlier. High school students who only knew the terms that are often mentioned in corporate management only in theory had the purpose of directly experiencing the short-term course of 'lean startup'. The announcement of 9 blocks of business modeling by teams at a higher level than I thought in the last class made me realize the importance of enthusiasm and early entrepreneurship education in our society.

3. Entrepreneurs as Leaders

A company is a continuous process of trying to be sensitive to constant change and find market opportunities, and entrepreneurs are the physical and mental leaders who spearhead this practice. They are the ones who dare to challenge the status quo, take risks, and drive innovation. Just like pilots in the cockpit, entrepreneurs navigate their companies through turbulence, making crucial decisions and adjusting their course when needed.

4. Life as a Personal Venture

What if you think of life as a gift from your mother and father regardless of your will, but the process of starting a company that will create and grow your life with your will? Life is not a passive experience; it's an opportunity to take charge and shape it according to your desires and aspirations. Similar to starting a business, life requires planning, determination, and the ability to adapt to unexpected challenges.

5. The Pressure of Attending Top Universities

In Korea, families invest in attending top universities with the belief that learning in school until their 20s determines most of their lives. They view education as the key to success and a pathway to a secure future. Of course, systematic investment in education can also lead to the achievement of the desired goal of admission to a top-notch university. However, we know all too well that just like starting a company, getting into a top university does not guarantee the fulfillment of one's dreams.

6. The Uncertainty of Life

A myriad of things happen in our lives beyond what we can predict. No matter how meticulously we plan, unexpected events and circumstances can alter our path significantly. Life is full of uncertainties, just like the startup journey. The ability to adapt, think on your feet, and pivot when necessary becomes crucial in navigating through the twists and turns that life throws at us.

7. Life after College: The Death Valley Section

In the startup market, a major crisis often occurs between 3 and 7 years from the time of founding, known as the Death Valley section. Similarly, if you think that you can overcome the wheel of destiny of a short-lived company only after crossing the crisis section, you can say that life after college is the Death Valley section of the company. It's a period of uncertainty and challenges where many individuals face difficulties finding their footing and realizing their aspirations.

8. Navigating the Startup Process

How do you think you can successfully go through this process of starting a life without the right answer and reach your destination safely? If your current life is hard and there is no end in sight, it is a matter of course. Take a moment to examine where your life is right now by looking at the solid entrepreneurs around you who are constantly striving to strengthen the organization of the company with entrepreneurial spirit and constantly have opportunities for growth. Seek inspiration from their resilience, determination, and ability to adapt.
