The Little Voice

The rain poured down in buckets over the small clothesline as it threatened to buckle under the weight of the waterlogged items. Kate stared longingly at the soaked green pencil skirt she had planned to wear to her interview in just under two hours. The absence of a suitable alternative meant a last minute dash to the shops was her only hope.

Perhaps worst of all was that Kate had known it would rain. Despite the weather report advising of clear skies, there was a nagging feeling as she unloaded the washing machine the previous afternoon telling her not to hang them out. “It’s just nerves about the interview.” she had told herself.

Thinking back to that moment of intuition as she drove to the shopping center, it became clear that life could be so much easier if she started listening to that little voice.

Kate knew that pushing aside logic to follow with what she felt or somehow just knew, would take some effort. After deciding to buy a notebook to write her knowings in to keep track of how often they were right, Kate found herself zoned out looking at stationary instead of skirts. “I don’t have time for this!” she realized. Rushing over to the notepads a cute set with a notebook, little black book and a fancy pen caught her eye. After paying she raced off to find what she came for.

Back at home and feeling satisfied that her choice of blue ottoman dress would match perfectly with her white interview jacket, there was a moment of gratitude for her current job in clothing retail. It had been fun, and the world of suburban fashion had been eye - opening but a change was overdue.

About to turn 30 and with her trusty Hyundi Xcel on its’ last legs, it was time to move up in terms of pay. The sales position at Lazy-Boy furniture came with the promise of commission on every sale on top of a wage that was much better than Kate’s current Just Jeans wage.

Exactly 45 minutes left before she would have to leave, was just enough time to check in with her intuition to ask about the outcome of the interview and then get ready. The answer come in the form of a warm glowing sensation filling her heart and Kate knew this had to be a positive sign.

A week passed by before the phone call finally came with the news that she had the job. In that time the notebook had already seen some very promising entries and Kate knew that she was really tapping into something profound. There was an overall feeling of being on the right path and little signs started popping up randomly. Even the number 777 started showing up on number plates and phone numbers and Kate learned that this was an angel number meaning you are on the right path and trust your intuition.

The next day Kate was on her way to Just Jeans to give her two weeks’ notice, with a horrible sinking feeling in her stomach. Not knowing what this could mean she took extra care driving and arrived at work wondering whether this was about giving notice. Maybe just for now she would hold off on telling the boss.

The day was uneventful, a few rude customers and a cheeky donut at lunch, nothing new. A song called breaking down by Florence and the machine looped around in her head

and she was glad that there was a promising new job to look forward to. It was time to give her notice; the weight in her stomach had to be about something else.

Kate handed her letter of resignation to Amber who had been her boss for almost three years; they spoke for a while about the fun they had working together, the process of claiming outstanding holiday pay, and the fact that Kate still needed to show up for two more weeks so there is no goodbye yet.

It went better than she imagined, and Kate practically floated to her car. Unfortunately, the little Xcel refused to start “Well that explains the bad feeling” Kate said to herself out loud.

A phone call to RACQ, A tow truck and two days without a car while it sat at the mechanic’s, was followed by a phone call explaining that oil leaks had ruined the starter motor and the cost to fix the Hyundi was just not worth it.

Public transport was not ideal. Just Jeans could cope with an employee being 10minutes late each day and it was only for two weeks after all. Lazy-Boy would be a challenge from the first day. The bus stops a 5minute walk from Kate’s new workplace 50 minutes before they open or 10 minutes after her shift starts on weekdays and Saturdays Kate will just have to take an Uber.

The weeks passed and a new routine took shape as Kate found new ways to tap into and strengthen her intuition. She leant about spirit guides and meditation and after a while noticed a sense of calm and purpose that allowed her to focus her intention on what she really wanted.

Sales were at a record high for a new employee and it felt good to be earning more and finally saving for a new car. There were still bad days, like when her umbrella broke and she showed up to work soaking wet. There was really no option but to turn around take the day off, missing out on a huge day of sales.

The little voice was strong enough that there was no need to continue using the notebook to prove it to herself. As Kate took one last look through it before packing it away, a strange entry jumped out and grabbed her attention. It was a dream about her last day at Just Jeans and in the dream, she was handed a phone number, but it was only 5 digits long.

Dreams do not always mean something, these numbers just seemed to be calling to Kate. She took out the little black address book and wrote in the number 00432 then packed away the notebook and put the address book in her handbag. Over the next few days this strange number remained in the back of her mind.

Julie was an old friend of Kate’s who offered to drive her into the city for a day of shopping and just upon entering Julie’s favorite shopping center they saw a new car being raffled off.

“Well, what does your intuition say?” asked Julie. “Got to be in it to win.” Grinned Kate, as she headed over to buy a ticket and imagined herself driving to work in her new Subaru Impreza.

Work got busy and Kate’s savings continued to grow, until a freak storm damaged the store one night and Lazy-Boy Furniture had to close temporarily. Insurance did several assessments before repairs got underway and it took 3 weeks to get everyone back to work.

This had been a blessing for Kate as she was finally able to travel interstate to visit her parents and spend time relaxing at the beach, however her savings did suffer. Getting a car on finance was starting to seem like the only option and this would be on her to-do-list as soon as she returned home.

Suddenly the phone rang, and Kate was informed that she had just won a prize in the raffle. She didn’t win the Subaru; she was still extremely lucky though; it was second prize and Kate’s jaw dropped when she heard that the second prize was actually $20,000. No one could believe it and they went out to celebrate over a fancy dinner.

Finally, everything was going right, and it felt like a dream. Back home Kate looked at the winning ticket on the fridge and for the first time since buying it she noticed there was a draw number in the bottom right corner. To her amazement the number was 00432, she opened the little black book to double check and the number was the same as the one in her dream. “It was no coincidence that I ended up buying that ticket.” She smiled as she put the book away.

“I guess it’s time to learn more about psychic dreams.” Kate thought to herself.
