The Kadiyanlena waterfall, located in Nawalapitiya, a green environment, gives even more charm to the already lovely landscape. The waterfall has a peculiar beauty that is unmatched by any other waterfall since it cascades down three steps. The initial part (8 m) descends as a single water stream. The second section (7-8 m) descends over a large boulder. With a total height of around 25m, the third piece, which is 8 to 9 meters long, begins to collapse directly beneath the arch bridge. The magnificent aspect of the water flowing in steps more than makes up for the lack of height, despite the fact that a height of 25m may not seem threatening enough. Water continues to strike the rock from a great height at each phase of the fall. As a result, the enormous boulders have little pools on them, making them perfect locations for diving. Bathing is advised in the first and second portions. Swimming is prohibited in the third stretch because it drops into a pond that is about 30 meters deep.

This stunning cascade has two names. She is known as Kadiyanlena Ella as she passes through the Kadiyanlena village. She was given the name Kataboola Ella since the Kataboola estate is nearby. The waterfall is safe to dive into, but use caution if you go when it's raining. It is not advised to enter the ponds or attempt to climb up or down the waterfall when it is raining since the rocks are naturally slick and a lot of water surges through them. The water body flows peacefully to the Mahaweli river after the captivating fall. A rock may be seen at the bottom of this waterfall, to the right of the water stream. A little home perched on the rock is surrounded by water that runs under it. The Kataboola Estate Powerhouse is a mysterious edifice. Although there is another way to get there, tourists are not permitted inside.

Best time to visit:

February to April

Getting to Kadiyanlena Falls

The Nawalapitiya Talawakele road (B-117 road, Kandy-Nuwara Eliya border) leads to Kadiyanlena Falls. Take the Kandy Road out of Kandy, via Peradeniya, Daulagala, Gampola, and Ulapane, and continue until you reach Nawalapitiya. The Kadiyanlena Falls are located around 10 kilometers down the Nawalapitiya-Kothmale Road. If you drive your own car, it is simple. Additionally, if you're traveling by bus, you must board a bus in Navakapitiya and go to Thispane, Talawakele.

Nawalapitiya to Kadiyanlena Falls – 36 min (13.2 km)

Kandy to Kadiyanlena Falls – 1 hr 32 min (46.1 km)

Talawakele to Kadiyanlena Falls – 1 hr (26.1 km)

Each of its five phases, which descend, forms spotless natural ponds. Locals claim that the first pool at the bottom is out of bounds because it is nearly 100 feet deep. Less than 10 feet deep and comparatively safer are the other four pools. Just the sight of such freshness relaxes your body, especially if you're tired of chlorine swimming pools. The water is crystal clear, cold, and pure. Since drinking alcohol is not permitted close to the falls, the area is kept pristine and tranquil.

It is not as busy as most of the famous waterfalls since it is not well-liked by casual tourists. It appears deserted, even on weekends. Although Nawalapitiya is the closest large town, keep in mind that there are no nice hotels or guesthouses in the region.

Experience in Nawalapitiya

Special remark:

  • According to locals, the first pool at the bottom is about 100 feet deep and is off-limits.
  • The water is very clear, cool and fresh
  • Unlike most famous waterfalls, it is not crowded.
  • There are leeches so take lime or saltwater.

For the safety of nature's splendors, you may stay beneath the waterfall and even take a bath to cool down in the water pools nurtured by the latter sections of the falls. You may all share this lovely wonder of Mother Nature, which could make a lasting entry in your journals.

I want to emphasize to you that the situation here is extremely perilous. Visitors must use extreme caution. During the wet season, the terrain is quite slick. So please take caution as you explore the delights of this stunning waterfall. If you intend to visit Kadiyanlena Falls, kindly respect our beautiful ecosystem and simply leave your footsteps behind.
