Is Udacity better than Coursera? Or, is Coursera better than Udacity?

Let us try to understand what these learning platforms offer. I will try to compare both learning platforms on a set of metrics. For each metric, we can compare and assess which is better. This would allow you to understand and decide which may be a better option for you to choose where to learn your next skill from!

Udacity Vs Coursera

For a better understanding and comparison, we need to list a few metrics against which the comparison will be made. There are many metrics that can be used but I will try to put those that are more user-centric. As ultimately, you have to use the platform to enhance your learning experience.

Here are some metrics for our comparison. Let’s begin!

1. Types Of Certifications And Courses

Udacity offers courses that are more career-oriented. All programs offered under Udacity are nono degrees and courses related to specific niches. The degrees they offer span around 9 major fields. The fields are Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems, Business, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Product Management, Programming & Development, and Career.

Udacity focuses more on specific subjects rather than generalized courses for individuals.

Coursera offers around 7000+ courses comprising nano degrees, certifications, and also graduate and postgraduate programs with partnerships with different universities. This program catalog is more extensive and offers more courses in different domains. They do not confine to limited subjects. You can find courses even on music production, graphic designing, and much more. Apart from this, their partnership with different universities and institutes makes it much more interesting and worthwhile.

One similar thing is that more platforms do offer certain free courses for you to learn. However, considering the program catalog of Coursera is much large, they have consequently more free courses as compared to Udacity.

Short Verdict: Coursera offers more as compared to Udacity. However, Udacity offers more specialized courses in some domains.

2. Offered Languages For Courses

Udacity and Coursera are learning platforms used by users across the globe. Having only one language can limit its reach for its growth. Both platforms do provide different languages in which you can start your learning journey.

Udacity provides a strong emphasis on English for its courses. The instructors use English as their primary language. However, they provide you with an option for using subtitles in different languages. Moreover, not every course comes with the option of subtitles. So, this may cause a little issue with many non-native English speakers.

On the contrary, Coursera offers courses in many languages other than English. They have many teachers designing the courses in different languages other than English. This provides a better alternative and easy learning experience for non-native English speakers. You can opt for your course and it is highly a chance that it would contain the course in your desired language.

Short Verdict: Coursera offers better language diversity in its courses along with transcripts.

3. Design, Interface And Accessibility

Udacity and Coursera both offer great interfaces for their users. The entire learning experience is quite fun, engaging, and easy to navigate. If you see both platforms, they both provide great filter options to sort your courses. You can sort the courses as per their domains, language, duration, price range, and even your skill levels.

Now, this is quite common for both platforms to provide extensive filter options. So, what is the difference?

One major difference lies in the fact that Udacity has no mobile application!

Udacity is only available on desktops. It is not available on mobile devices. This can be a little disheartening for many people. Where almost everything can be done using a simple smartphone, people do prefer mobile accessibility for their learning experience as well.

On the contrary, Coursera is available on desktop, iOS, and Android devices. This makes this platform more accessible as compared to Udacity.

Short Verdict: Coursera offers better accessibility for all devices.

4. Pricing Models

Both learning platforms offer different approaches to payments.

Udacity offers a fixed monthly fee when you enroll in any course. Now the time you take to finish the course will decide how many months you pay and what is your final payment amount. However, if you pay in advance for the entire program, you can reduce the monthly amount to $399. Think of this as a monthly subscription model.

On the contrary, Coursera offers a more flexible option for payments. You can purchase a specific course and the amount would differ depending on the course. Coursera also offers Coursera Plus. This is like a monthly subscription plan. But, this is quite better as compared to Udacity’s pricing model. In Coursera plus, you pay an annual amount and you can enroll in as many courses as you want. You will receive almost all certifications and courses under this. There are a handful of courses that are not covered in Coursera plus. These courses would be degrees and master track certificates. The reason to not include this under Coursera plus is that these courses are quite expensive and can cost as much as $20,000 and above.

Short Verdict: Coursera appears much better in terms of payments and affordability.

5. Solution For Enterprise And Companies

Both the learning platforms offer enterprise solutions that help companies upskill their workforce. You can use these platforms to train your employees and upgrade their skills.

Udacity offers its platform for enterprises and companies to enroll. This can help companies improve their skills with their specialized courses. There is no mention of any amount of the enterprise solution. For every enterprise or company, they would request you for a call with their experts. Their entire call is a consultation to understand your requirements and provide cost estimates. There is no amount mentioned for any level of enterprise or company.

Coursera offers a similar approach. For an enterprise solution wherein you are trying to enroll your employees in courses, you need to connect over a call with them. They will try to understand your requirements and submit the cost estimate. However, Coursera does provide an amount to start with. If you see the Coursera website, mentions $319 USD per user for 12 months. This is applicable for a team of up to 125 employees. But, if you still want a different requirement or your workforce is larger in number, you can always connect on a call and discuss your costs.

Short Verdict: Both offer customized plans for enterprises. However, Coursera offers a fixed amount for a company with a certain number of employees.
