Freelancing is when you work for different clients with no strings attached. You work per project and once you’re done, you get paid for it. Then you move to the next project that requires you to complete in order for you to earn out of it again.

Although some people preferred to work remotely under one client, there are pros and cons of being a freelancer. Most of the time, freelancing is being done in order to make an extra income. However, you can make a living as a freelancer.

How to Earn a Living from Freelancing

1. Choose A Specific Service to Offer

You cannot just do any jobs available or you may end up being unhappy and exhausted. Determine what skills do you have and where do you most stand out.

What skills do you get a lot of praise for?

You have to be aware of where you’re good at and if it’s possible for someone to pay for that skill of yours. Find out what skills do you possess that can give more value for your future client. That’s how you can get started to make a living from freelancing.

What type of job are you happy about doing?

It’s not enough for you to just take any jobs online. You need to choose one that you are passionate about. If you do, then you can make sure to enjoy freelancing and feel as if it’s not just another job.

2. Find A Direct Client

The most popular thing to get a freelance job is to apply on job boards. It’s the easiest way to start but then again, it might not make you enough money to have more freedom.

If you think that you are able to work as a freelancer without having to get a middleman, then go for it. Finding your own client is harder. However, when you do find one it will provide better rewards.

I’m not against applying with job boards. But the problem with those is that you will have a lot of competition. Since there are a lot of more talented people out there, you might end up waiting in vain.

3. Set Your Expectations

Once you were and to find your own client, it’s time to set your expectations. You can’t just work for their own terms. It’s also important to inform them what are your requirements.

Depending on your skills, you have to set a fair rate for your client. You can meet halfway so that you can both agree on how much they will need to pay you.

It’s also important to know how many hours and what days do you need to work on your project. Just set the rules for both parties so that you can work in harmony.

4. Build Your Portfolio

It doesn’t mean that when you found a client to work for that it’s over. You will need to start building your portfolio as a freelancer. That way, if it’s time to move on into a greener pasture you are well equipped.

Since you are now working online, you need to have your own website. It’s where you can highlight your skills and experiences as a freelancer. If you’re not a writer, you can just maintain a LinkedIn account.

By displaying your portfolio online, it can create better opportunities for you. Most businessmen and entrepreneurs are looking for more competitive freelancers. Don’t hide your credentials if you want to make it big to the freelancing industry.

5. Have A Specific Goal

Being a freelancer is different from the traditional jobs out there. Since you’re on your own, you will need to set a specific goal to achieve.

Think like an entrepreneur now that you are no longer just an employee. You are running a business and you are the boss. But you have to set a goal in mind in order not to get stuck with just ‘getting by’ status.

Set your financial goal daily, weekly and monthly. Track your income in order for you to know where are you at. If you need to earn more, then set the target and make sure to hit it.

Conclusion

Being a freelancer can be a rewarding experience. Being their own boss is what most of us want to achieve. Now that you were able to become one, don’t let it falter if something unexpected happens. Just continue to work hard for your goals and provide a better service for your clients. For sure, you will not just be making a living but living the dream soon.
