The global scoliosis braces market was valued at USD 187.9 Million in 2019 and is projected to reach USD 260.3 Million by 2027, expanding around a CAGR of 4.4% during the forecast period. Scoliosis is a condition where there is curvature in the spine on the one side, which often happens just before puberty during the growth spurt. The cause of most of the scoliosis is unknown, although scoliosis may be caused due to conditions such as brain paralysis and dystrophy. About 3% of teenagers suffer from scoliosis. Most scoliosis is mild; however, some spine deformities continue to grow as the child grows. Severe scoliosis are difficult to treat and have a low success rate.

Musculoskeletal disorders are a category of diseases whose incidence is rising steeply with age and are rarely fatal. Most patients with musculoskeletal disorders suffer from scoliosis in the later stage of musculoskeletal disorder in which the curvature of the spinal cord is affected. This increases the need for external support such as braces to inhibit the growth of scoliosis and recover or improve from the current state of the disorders.

The increase in prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and rise in incidence of scoliosis fuels the demand for scoliosis braces. Cerebral palsy (CP) is associated with the defects in the spine, such as curvature (scoliosis), bump-back (kyphosis), and saddleback (lordosis). The spinal deformity can cause chronic back pain when sitting, standing, and walking. People with CP are more likely to have bone fractures, most often during physical therapy sessions. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is one of the most common muscular dystrophies affecting an estimated 1 out of 3,600–6,000 newborn males. The progression of scoliosis is rapid in patients with an increment of angulation from 16° to 24° per year during a young growth spurt. Increasing incidence of CP and muscular dystrophy is expected to boost the number of scoliosis patients worldwide, which in turn, fuels the demand for scoliosis braces.

Increasing Cases of Scoliosis

Scoliosis cases are rising globally, especially among children, which is increasing the demand for scoliosis braces. Scoliosis patients visit more than 600,000 private physicians every year, it is estimated at 30,000 children have been prescribed braces and spinal fusion operation are conducted on 38,000 patients. Embryological malformation of one or more vertebrae during infancy or various disorders such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spinal cord trauma, spinal bifida, and spinal muscular atrophy in childhood and adulthood are mainly responsible for scoliosis. Increase screen timing and siting in a wrong posture for long periods of time boosting the number of scoliosis cases, which in turn are boosting the requirement for scoliosis braces.

Lack of Knowledge about the Disorders

The wide variations in approaches and the absence of treatment facilities have led to correct data dilution and loss of clear management and treatment pathways in the treatment of scoliosis. Patients suffering from scoliosis are often unaware of the available treatment to control the progression of the scoliosis curvature. Sometimes, the diagnosis of the scoliosis condition is unknown in mild scoliosis condition having less than 20 degrees of curvature due to ignorance, which in turn is fueling the number of surgery procedures.

Segmental Outlook

On the basis of products, the global Scoliosis Braces Market is segmented as Boston braces, Charleston bending braces, Rigo-Cheneau Braces, SpineCor Braces, Wilmington braces, others. The SpineCor Braces segment is anticipated to expand at a CAGR of around 4.9% during the forecast period as this brace is most effective on young patients, and is typically worn for 20 hours a day. The patient should not be permitted to take off the brace for more than two hours. The boson braces segment is estimated to hold over 1/4th share of the market in 2019 as these braces are preferred by many as a form of a thoracic-lumbar-sacral orthosis.

Based on type, the market is segmented into cast braces, rigid braces, and non-rigid dynamic braces. Rigid braces account for the major share as it is used to limit or hinder scoliosis development. The brace puts pressure above and beneath a curve, making a triangle with three pads. Various curves require different pad positioning, depending on the magnitude and location of the curve. Rigid braces are worn for 16 to 24 hours a day (in school, at home, and in bed). These braces are made from plastic that soften when heated to form the patient's shape.

In terms of regions, the market is fragmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. North America is a promising region for the market. In terms of value the region constituted significant share of the market in 2019. The market in the region is projected to expand at a CAGR around 4.3% during the forecast period as there is as government spending has increased and rising awareness about the scoliosis braces, and growing incidences of scoliosis in the region are expected to create new opportunities are some of the factors expected to boost the market growth on the region.
