I've received a few questions about how Trader Joe's interviews work. Trader Joe's is such a unique company that people get really interested and curious about the hiring process at Trader Joe's. A few hiring managers have also asked me for more of an outline to share with their interviewers that gives better guidance on what to cover in the interviews.

So, I decided to put together a FAQ for applicants (or just future employees) and hiring managers, but also for anyone who's just interested in learning more about how a retailer like Trader Joe's hires new employees.

Do you have to pay for your trader joe’s uniform?

Trader Joe’s does not require its employees to pay for their uniforms. However, some stores may charge a small fee for the initial uniform purchase. What is the dress code at Trader Joe’s? Trader Joe’s dress code is casual. You can wear anything from khakis and jeans to shorts and sandals while working in the store.

Shirts must be short sleeved or long sleeved and collared. Is there a lot of overtime at Trader Joe’s? Yes, Trader Joe’s has very flexible scheduling so you may need to work more than 40 hours per week during busy seasons such as holiday shopping time or during new product launches.

How much do Trader Joe's employees get paid? Trader Joe’s pay is competitive with other retail jobs and varies by location with starting salaries ranging from $10 - $14 an hour depending on the location where you live (the average starting salary is $11 an hour). The next step is drug testing and background check (if applicable). After passing these steps and obtaining employment at Trader Joe's, you can expect a two-week training program where you will learn all aspects of working in the grocery store environment including cash register operation and customer service skills. Thereafter, each employee receives three days of training per year so that they can continue to grow professionally as well as personally within their position at Trader Joe's!
