Edwin Diaz is a Major League Baseball pitcher currently playing for the New York Mets. Born on March 22, 1994, in Naguabo, Puerto Rico, Diaz is a hard-throwing right-hander who has quickly become one of the game's most dominant closers. In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at Edwin Diaz's career and what makes him such a unique and exciting player to watch.

Early Career :

Diaz was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the third round of the 2012 MLB draft. After a few years in the minor leagues, he made his MLB debut in 2016, pitching out of the bullpen for the Mariners. In his rookie season, Diaz showed flashes of brilliance, striking out 88 batters in just 51.2 innings pitched. He quickly became a key member of the Mariners' bullpen, known for his high-velocity fastball and devastating slider.

Dominance in Seattle :

Diaz's breakout season came in 2018 when he led the American League in saves with 57, while also posting a 1.96 ERA and striking out an eye-popping 124 batters in just 73.1 innings pitched. He was named to the All-Star team and finished eighth in AL Cy Young Award voting. That season, Diaz became known for his ability to generate swings and misses, recording a strikeout rate of 44.3%, the highest of any pitcher in MLB history with at least 50 innings pitched.

Trade to the Mets :

Despite Diaz's dominance in Seattle, the Mariners decided to trade him to the New York Mets before the 2019 season. In exchange, the Mets sent a package of prospects to Seattle, including outfielder Jarred Kelenic, one of the top prospects in all of baseball. The trade was widely criticized at the time, as many believed the Mets had given up too much for Diaz. However, the Mets were eager to acquire a dominant closer, and they saw Diaz as the missing piece of their bullpen.

Struggles in New York :

Unfortunately for the Mets, Diaz struggled in his first season in New York. He finished the year with a 5.59 ERA and blew seven saves, tying a career-high. Despite his struggles, the Mets stuck with Diaz, believing that he would bounce back in 2020.

Return to Dominance :

And bounce back, he did. In the shortened 2020 season, Diaz posted a 1.75 ERA, struck out 50 batters in 25.2 innings pitched, and saved six games. He regained the form that made him one of the most feared closers in the game, and he once again became a key member of the Mets' bullpen.

What Makes Diaz Unique :

So what is it that makes Edwin Diaz such a unique and exciting player to watch? For one, it's his velocity. Diaz regularly throws his fastball in the upper 90s and can touch triple digits when he really lets it fly. He complements that with a sharp slider that he can throw for strikes or use as a chase pitch to get hitters to swing and miss.

But it's not just his stuff that makes him unique. Diaz also has a swagger and confidence on the mound that is rare for a player his age. He's not afraid to challenge hitters with his best stuff, and he's not afraid to show emotion when he gets a big strikeout or closes out a game.

Finally, Diaz's journey to the Major Leagues is also unique. He grew up in a small town in Puerto Rico and was discovered by scouts while playing in a local tournament. He worked his way up through the minor leagues and overcame some early struggles to become one of the game's best closers.
