Nigerian singer Iyanya is speaking in a new interview with Hip Tv and opening up about two major things that have become talking points among music fans in Nigeria. The first is the new trend of Afrobeats artistes like Wizkid, Fireboy, and Burna Boy trying to distance themselves from the tag "afrobeats", and the next is about the kind of indecent dancing done on stage by some Afrobeats performers, especially with their female fans. Iyanya spoke about both things and this is what he said.

Speaking first about the genre of Afrobeats and what he thinks about his peers trying to distance themselves from the tag of the genre, Iyanya said:

IYANYA: If Afrobeats is African music, then it's African music. You understand? And I believe the reason why it's called Afrobeats is because you have to classify genres. You have to classify genres when you're talking about different genres. You have to say this is country, this is hip-hop. You have to classify genres. So we're all doing African music and we're representing Afrobeats. Afrobeats is Afrobeats. At the end of the day, we are a culture. We are the Afrobeats culture. There are people who did it before us, there are people who are doing it now, there are people who will keep doing it. So it's a collective movement.

Then, when asked about why many artistes choose to engage in erotic dancing with female fans during performances, Iyanya explained saying:

IYANYA: You know what? If you check, most times, these things happen outside Nigeria. You know the fans over there, they're more expressive. I'm not saying we don't have expressive fans over here but I'm saying that over there, most of them or many of them, they have transformed their fans from black to white and they now think like white people. So when they are showing you love, they don't hold back. It's not forming. It's like "oh I'm here to see this guy cuz I love this guy and I love this guy's music." So that could lead to many things.
