Introduction

Jordan is known for its ancient history, rich heritage, religious traditions, and unique culture. It’s a landlocked country in the Middle East and is home to some of the oldest civilizations in the world.

 History

Jordan is a country in the Middle East, which is well-known for its rich history, diverse culture, and friendly people. The ancient country was founded by a group of tribes called the Nabataeans in about 616 BC, and since then, it has had many rulers. The Nabataean civilization was one of the first known civilizations to have used glass, and even today, some of the oldest known glass bottles are found in the country.

What is Jordan Famous For?

1. Ancient Cities & Tourist Destinations

Jordan is one of the most popular destinations for tourists, because of its beautiful nature and historical sites. There are many places in Jordan, where you can visit, including Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea. Also, there are many national parks that offer an excellent opportunity to experience the wildlife and landscapes. The ancient city of Petra is located in Jordan and is considered to be the best-preserved ancient city in the world. It is home to beautiful rock formations, and there are a lot of places to visit around the city too. The capital city, Amman, is also a beautiful city and one of the cleanest in the Middle East. In addition to its historic sites, you can also find many natural attractions including Mount Nebo, Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea. Today, those are one of the most famous places to visit in the world.

2. Safe Heaven

Hospitality is deeply rooted in the Jordanian, predominantly Beduin, culture. I can't think of any other country that is hosting so many refugees and yet still considered one of the safest countries in the region and their population, despite being diverse, live in great harmony. I think it is important to highlight this particular aspect of Jordanian society when we talk about what Jordan is famous for.

3. Lowest Point on Earth

The Dead Sea is the lowest point in the world and it is located in Jordan. It is approximately 350 meters below sea level. While it is the lowest place on Earth, however, the dead sea is not the deepest lake in the world.

4. Moderate Politics

In a heated region surrounded by conflicts and hostile governments, Jordan managed to keep friendly relations with its neighbors and keep its borders secure for decades. Jordan is one of the few countries in the Middle East to have escaped the turmoil that engulfed neighboring Arab states. It has miraculously remained stable economically and politically.

 5. Mansaf

Jordanians are very proud of this rich dish. Mansaf is a traditional Jordanian dish consisting of rice, meat, and flatbread cooked together with milk or yogurt and spiced with local flavors. It’s usually served at lunch or dinner time. While Mansaf may not be well known in USA or Europe, it is a very popular Jordanian brand in the Middle East.

Some other things Jordan is popular for

  • Arabic coffee. It is served bitter. Refusing to drink it or placing it on the floor/table is still considered an insult in many Beduin households.
  • The red keffiyeh (headdress). You will see it used by Jordan football fans for example.
  • Stacked houses on hills. That is a very remarkable site in Amman.
  • Hot dry weather. It doesn't rain much in Jordan, especially in the period between March and October.
  • Olive trees. That is why Jordanian olive oils are one of the best in quality
