A Gentleman's Notes.

Exhausted.

The exact feeling that is coursing through the head of Mr Fiddle as he rests on his desk.

14 hours with two breaks and now he can finally sit down, he slowly lifts his arm up as his wife brings him some hot coffee.

“Evan you need to wake up” Alison says.

“I don’t think I can” Fiddle replies. Eyes heavy.

Alison says, “Get up and go for a walk.”

“It’s 1:00AM at night Alison, only weirdos are waiting outside”.

She convinces him and he gets his shoes on. He takes his first steps outside and looks to his left as he begins walking down the path with the most light. The path is lit like a runway. It is a casual stroll until he notices a light that is very odd and slightly flickering. He continues walking and just before he passes, the light turns off. Evan looks up but when he looks down again, he instantly notices a man in a long dark coat on the other side of the road.

He continues walking and the man begins following in his direction. Evan says to himself, “This is the exact reason why I didn’t want to go for a walk.” Evan speeds up and the man matches his speed. He begins to panic and starts looking back more and more. Evan realises that he is getting considerably further away from his house and instead begins building up the courage to ask this man what he wants.

Eventually, Evan turns around says in a firm voice, “What do you want, why are you here?”

The man continues walking towards Evan and he slowly begins stepping back. The man then stops a few centimetres away from Evan, takes off his hood and says in a croaky voice, “I’m here to change your life.”

Evan opens the door, closes it behind him and heads straight upstairs. He opens his bed side table and reveals The black book. As he goes to put it away, he notices that it has writing on it. It reads, ‘A Gentleman’s Notes.’ He is about to flip open the book, but his wife Alison shouts his name. He quickly puts the book in the drawer, slides the cabinet closed and heads downstairs.

The following day Alison wakes up to an expensive necklace, upon inspecting it she instantly begins to wonder where Evan acquired that amount of money to buy it. “Evan where did you get this from?” she says.

“From the shop Alison, where else would it be from?” Evan humorously replies.

“Don’t get smart with me. Where did you get the money to get this necklace? We are in debt Evan,” says Alison agitated.

“Don’t worry about the debt Hun,” Evan softly answers.

“Don’t call me Hun. Where did you get the money from Evan?” Alison says as she begins to raise her voice.

Evan takes a pause, “You know what?”

“What?” Alison responds.

“You’re always nagging and never thanking, you’re so ungrateful. All you do is stay at home and expect me to do everything. Say Thankyou or get out of my face!”

Alison storms off as Evan notices tears roll down her face. He realises he promised he would never talk to her or about her in that way, however something is beginning to transform his personality.

It has been two days and they have not been able to spend more than half an hour getting along. They are becoming more distanced as time goes on. Evan knows his mood is taking a toll on his relationship, but he just cannot seem to control himself.

Months go by and nothing has changed, every day is another problem.

It has been a 12-year marriage, but their relationship isn’t going the right way. One day Alison snaps and tells Evan what is on her mind.

“Evan, I think a divorce is what’s needed.”

Evan’s skin turns white as he stutters, “Whaa…what?”

He knows it is all his fault, but the pain still weighs like a ton of bricks. Alison continues, “I have been thinking about this for a long time, things haven’t been working. Evan you need to wake up.”

As she finishes the sentence, a notification rings on both their phones and she reads it quietly:

“Dear Mr and Mrs Fiddle, as we have noticed you have been spending a lot of money recently, we have come to the conclusion that we are going to gift you with 20,000 dollars per week. It’s time for you to wake up. Sent from The Dark Fund Trust.”

“Who is The Dark Fund Trust and why are they sending us so much money?”

Evan looks at her in shock and does not utter a word.

Alison raises her voice and says, “Who are they Evan?”

“How am I supposed to know who has been watching us?” Evan responds.

Filled with anger Alison shouts, “WELL YOU’RE THE ONE WHO KEEPS SPENDING ALL THE MONEY!”

Evan takes a deep breath as he sees an argument is about to arise.

“Alison, I know you’re angry but I do not know what that organisation is,” says Evan calmly.

“Who said anything about an organisation? You need to wake up and start telling me the truth!” Alison replies.

“You need to stop telling me to wake up!” Evan exclaims angrily.

“What do you mean ‘stop’? You have to wake up!” Alison declares while trying to match his tone.

Evan leaves the house to stop an argument arising, he gets in his car and realises that he has not eaten for a couple of hours. He decides to go and order food to avoid confrontation with his wife and so he heads to the nearest restaurant. He arrives and enters the restaurant to see there is a big queue. When it is finally his turn, he steps forward and orders his food. He takes his money to pay and hands it over, the cashier grabs his hand and says in a croaky voice, “Thank you very much. Actually before you go, Evan you have to wake up”.

Shocked, Evan replies, “I didn’t tell you my name!” Evan suddenly feels a chill up his spine and heads for the exit immediately. He has a weird feeling, and something tells him to head straight home, so he gets in his car and starts driving dangerously. He is on his way home and everything is a blur but he manages to see an advertisement board that reads on it, ‘save it before you lose it’ and he knows exactly what he must do. He arrives home and opens the door and notices his wife stood up in the hallway facing away from him. He begins apologising, “Alison I’m so sorry for everything. I should have told you the truth, the truth is…”

She cuts him off and says in a soft quiet voice, “Stop, don’t tell me.”

Evan replies, “Why? I need to tell you the truth.”

She turns around with her head looking towards the floor and says, “You don’t need to tell me the truth.”

“What, why?” Evan says.

She looks up and she stares straight through him, her eyes are bloodshot red and blood begins dripping from her nose.

“Oh my gosh, you’re bleeding Alison!”

He hurries to get her a tissue but when he returns, he sees her still standing there, staring at him with bloodshot red eyes, the blood still dripping from her nose.

She begins to shake slightly and Evan asks in a worried voice, “Alison are you okay?”

She sprints at him and screams, “EVAN WAKE UP!”

As soon as her hands grab his shoulder, everything goes black.

He opens his eyes.

A bright light shines above him and begins to fade as his eyes adjust to the light in the room, he looks to his right, then left and sees he is surrounded by walls. The room looks almost completely empty. His body jolts up but he is held down by straps at his feet, arms and chest.

A doctor walks in and says four words, “You finally woke up."

Evan snaps and shouts, “Where am I?”

The doctor says, “You were selected for some sort of experiment; the authorities are currently investigating as they suspect you were targeted by The Dark Trust Fund, also known as TDTF. They have not found any key evidence yet.”

“Who are they?” Evan asks.

“We are not sure, but we do know they are an organisation who work on experimenting with supernatural experiences and had chosen you to take part in their experiment.”

“How do you know all of this?”

“Inside sources,” the doctor says quietly.

Evan looks around as he notices that his wife is not anywhere to be seen, “Where’s my wife?”

“Your wife?”

“Yes, my wife. Alison.”

“Your wife died 9 years ago.”

“What?”

“You’ve been in a coma for 12 years Mr Fiddle.”

Mr Fiddle looks at the doctor with a blank expression.

The doctor continues, “We need to do a few tests but when I return, I need you to tell me everything you experienced in your coma.”

“How did this happen; how did I end up in a coma?”

“When you took hold of the of the black book, it sent you into a coma and so you were rushed here to our facility where we examined you for results.”

“A Gentleman’s Notes,” Mr Fiddle whispers.

“So you do remember the book?” The doctor interrupts.

Mr fiddle’s face opens in horror as he nervously responds, “Wait, how did you know that was the name of the book?”

The straps tighten and Mr Fiddle feels a sharp sting in his arm. He looks down and sees a needle piercing his skin. At that very moment, the doctor says in a croaky voice, “Don’t Worry Evan, the experiment is almost finished.”

The doctor removes the needle and puts it between the pages of a book. The same black book that Evan got given.

The doctor stands up and begins walking away.

Mr Fiddle shouts in confusion, “What do you mean the experiment is almost finished?”

His body begins feeling fuzzy and his eyesight becomes blurry. As his eyes begin to shut, he looks at the doctor and sees four initials that make his heart drop.

“TDTF”.

His eyes become heavy and the light fades.

Everything goes black.
