Humans are social beings who thrive on social as well as intimate relationships. It is often said that,

"The beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder"

But is that statement applicable to human relationships also? I hardly think so. It is because humans make relationships, both social as well intimate, based on their own choices, prejudices and most important of them all, physical beauty!

Let's talk about it in the context of both social as well as intimate relationships,

Social Relationships

Think about it, whom do we love to talk with more? Let me give you some starters regarding this. We all love to tal to a person who is,

1. Physical more attractive, and/or

2. Fun to be around, and/or

3. Is popular, and/or

4. Is very intelligent.

But do all people in this world are like that?

Nope, not at all! Stats show that hardly 2 percent of the world's population can be put in all these categories! The rest of them are ridiculed or mocked by the people in one or more ways.

Hence we have a very minuscule chance that we will be able to meet or be a person who possess either of these qualities or almost a nil chance of meeting or being a person who possess all of these qualities combined. That's the prime reason of why we all are in some way or the other dissatisfies and unfulfilled with our social relationships.

Intimate relationships

The dissatisfaction in intimate relationships is even greater that that present in social ones! But first, let's talk about what are our expectations with the intimate relationships.

For girls,

1. A well hung stud, and/or

2. A millionaire or a billionaire, and/or

3. A cook in the kitchen and a fantastic lover in the bedroom among other qualities.

For boys,

1. A super hot sexy girl like Olivia Wilde, and/or

2. A girl who is very apt in doing all the household work(Applicable specially to Indian guys).

Now think about this,

How many guys/girls will you be able to find bearing either one of these qualities in your lifetime?

And the answer to that is, either none or rare.

And that's the reason for the strain in the intimate relationships, the high expectations. The non fulfillment of these high expectations translates to feelings of non satisfaction towards one's partner which ultimately results in arousal of feelings of hatred and utter discontent.

The sad reality of human relationships is that they are superficial in their nature. this superficial nature results in feelings of infatuation rather than of deep love. Relationships today, whether social or intimate, always take into account any gains or losses in accordance with their aspirations to be successful. According to leading sociologists, this has resulted in the relationships becoming a "Social contracts" rather than "Love bonds".

Let me give you a real life example of this thing,

My best friend got into a relationship with a girl who by measurement of physical standards alone, was not at all beautiful. But my friend love her for what she was. However, since he was a stud, our classmates often said this to him,

"Man! why you got into a relationship with her? There are plenty of much better fish in the sea!"

This statement itself represent the malfunctioning mentality of the people. At last, this societal mentality took a toll on his mentality too and he broke up with her! That girl became so heartbroken that she ultimately landed into depression and committed suicide!

Now, who was really responsible for her suicide? Was it my friend?, or was it the society that told him to break up with her? And the answer to that is BOTH!

This is the hypocrisy of humans in the sphere of relationships. This type of trend is not just ruining our personal life but the society as a whole too. This is a sad reality we all have to accept and live with. It is what it is. In the end, there is no thing as,

"Beauty lies in the eyes of beholder"
