For a while, Tencent security guard Duan Xiaolei became an inspirational legend, just like Jeremy Lin, who took the world by storm some time ago.

"It doesn't matter where you stand today, but it matters where you go next." The phrase is apt to describe Duan Xiaolei (Dream), who has become an external employee of Tencent Research Institute and is responsible for basic work such as data collation.

Duan Xiaolei, 24, graduated from Luoyang Normal University with a double degree in computer science and business administration. In the eyes of the counselors in his freshman and sophomore years, he was a hardworking boy. He was the monitor of the class in his freshman year. He was not tall, handsome, and not the best in academic performance, but he liked his major of computer science and technology very much. Zhao Hui, his senior counselor, said the student impressed her as being polite to others. Zhao's office is not far from the computer lab, and she often sees Duan bringing books to the lab. "In the second half of the senior year, many students focus on getting jobs, but he has been quietly working on his graduation project at school."

After graduating in 2011, Duan moved to Beijing with his dream of becoming an IT professional manager. After many setbacks, he decided to work as a security guard so that he could earn his living as soon as possible, but he didn't tell his parents back home.

Soon, he became a "celebrity" on the 20th floor of the Tencent branch. 'It's normal for Duan to be warm and ask questions,' says his colleague, Hsiang Chieh. While working as a security guard, Duan has not been idle. He stood up for seven hours a day. When he got home, his back was sore and his legs were aching, he read and studied until 10 p.m. In February, Tencent Research needed a group of outside employees. Earlier, Duan had officially resigned. After the interview, he successfully became an external employee of Tencent Research Institute.
