Tattoos & Lymphoma New Study Shows 21% Increased Risk

The research, conducted by scholars from Lund University in Sweden, scrutinized 11,905 individuals, including 2,938 participants diagnosed with lymphoma, aged between 20 and 60. Both lymphoma patients and members of the control group provided data through a questionnaire concerning their tattoo history.

Published on May 21 in eClinicalMedicine, the study revealed that the risk of developing lymphoma is 21% greater among those with tattoos. This heightened risk is particularly pronounced in individuals who acquired their first tattoo within the last two years.

Remarkably, the study did not discover any link between the size of the tattoo and a higher risk of lymphoma.

The study revealed that follicular lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma were the most common cancer forms among the patients.

Lead author Dr. Christel Nielsen, a professor at Lund University, said, "After correcting for other relevant factors like smoking and age, we discovered that persons with tattoos face a 21% increased risk of acquiring lymphoma." It is important to keep in mind that lymphoma is a relatively uncommon illness, even though our findings are relevant to a wider population. Additional research are presently being conducted to validate and investigate these results further.

Dr. Nielsen went on to say, "We already know that when tattoo ink is put into the skin, the body reacts by thinking it is something foreign. After then, a large portion of the ink is transferred from the skin to the lymph nodes, where it gathers."

The study aims to explore potential associations between different types of cancer and inflammatory diseases as well as tattoos.

"It is conceivable that people will still use tattoos to express themselves. Therefore, it is imperative that society guarantee the safety of this activity," Nielsen underlined. "It is crucial for people to understand that tattoos might have an adverse effect on their health. If you experience any symptoms that might be connected to your tattoo, please see a healthcare professional."

According to the Mayo Clinic, tattoos can increase the risk of skin infections by upsetting the skin's natural barrier. Some people may experience adverse reactions to tattoo colors, which show up as rashes. Additionally, though this is rare, tattoos may make an MRI scan more challenging by reducing the image quality.

According to research published in August 2023 by the Pew Research Center, 22% of adults have more than one tattoo, while 32% of adults have at least one tattoo.

The Qur'an here describes the condition of those unbelievers who denied the Hereafter and the Day of Judgment.

Regretfully, nowadays the Muslims have characterized themselves by the same condition as a result of Western education and material needs and desires.

All our attempts to make progress in the fields of various branches of knowledge, sciences and arts pivot on, or revolve around, economics.

They do not think even by mistake about ma'adiyyat (matters relating to the Life Hereinafter). We believe in the Holy Prophet ﷺ and hope for his intercession.

But Allah commands the Holy Prophet ﷺ to withdraw from the people of misguidance and shun them. We seek refuge in Allah from such misguidance!
