Little Black Book
Two days after the funeral, it arrived at her apartment; a brown paper parcel, neatly wrapped, postmarked from Nina's lawyer. It stayed on the front hall table for three more days, as she was just too busy to open it. She knew what was inside. They had been told that there was no money. Aunt Nina had lived a simple life for a poet of international acclaim. Nora's brothers had been sure there was some money coming to them after Nina passed, and their anger was palpable at the funeral home when Tom Muston of Muston and Graves had approached them to discuss it. He informed them that they would each be receiving a couple of Nina's favourite books. Ned and Nelson were not the reading type. They certainly didn't display an advanced, or even non-vulgar vocabulary upon receiving this news either, and Nora had simply thanked Mr. Muston and walked away, leaving her brothers to their cursing and name-calling.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was in the editing lab with my best friend, Stephon, adding the finishing touches to our video assignment. Nothing too exciting, just a five minute short for class. We always took the video assignments with a grain of salt, no matter how hard we tried, we got overlooked for video of the week. It was such a popularity contest. Sure, we didn’t know all the editing tricks in Final Cut but with my knack for storytelling and his techniques with the camera, we usually ended up in second or third. Right behind the photoshop nerds, their meme videos are the furthest thing from funny, or the Twins, the loins from a pair of actors. They aren’t even A-List actors, so I still don’t understand the obsession.

The Mysterious Little Black Book
Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated by pencil and paper. I was exposed to stationary at an early age because moms would take their kids with them whenever they went shopping. Department stores had stationary sections with stacks of paper and pencils that I was enchanted with, not yet understanding the power of the written word. Growing up I never thought much about writing until high school where writing was forced upon me and all the other students for book reports and essays.

The Friend I Never Knew
The sun was just starting to come up as I turned into the parking lot of the factory. The radio hosts were chatting about how it was going to be another beautiful summer day. I parked in the same spot I had every day. I sat listening to the radio DJ’s talking as the newest hit song started to play. Turning it up, I take a sip of coffee and open my book.

Ashes to Ashes
Rushing out her garage to seek cover from the cold like she has all other winter days she fumbled for her keys. Sloshing up the icy wet stairs she almost put her key in the lock when a car pulled into her driveway. The turn signals blinking off the front and the slow pull in made it obvious they weren’t just turning around somewhere or lost. They were cautiously waiting to enter here this big Navy blue SUV. She paused with her keys poised and ready to pierce the hole but froze in alertness as she curiously observed this vehicle. Did she know someone with this model of car? She couldn’t bring any concrete thoughts or memories to answer that question. Two men’s silhouettes formed she now could peered into the SUV. A slight moment of panic rode up her spine and hair already standing tall like soldiers In this cold;crept up even higher. Should she hurry inside and get a weapon? Should she tactfully wait to see what they say with her cell phone ready to call authorities? Before she could panic much longer the driver popped out with a welcoming smile. He wore a business suit and shiny watch, about the only thing not dull in this wet wintery day in Faith, NC. The coulds white grey and heavy with future snow dimmed out much of everything. He stated her name firmly and pronunciation was sharp. He gestured to her with a gentle hand as he then asked if that was indeed her. She found her phone and had it ready as she shoved her house key into the lock. She felt unsure of how the man knew her name and now the other man closest to her was exiting the SUV. “Don’t be alarmed we are just following up from an estate we need to close out. We have been trying to reach you by phone but I’m afraid we have the wrong number or perhaps an older one.” His voice was soft, and kind of sexy. She felt immediately soothe and slightly turned on.

THE KEY of DESTINY
THE KEY OF DESTINY By: Jenise Johnson “Jenny? Jenny honey, where are you? Jenny?” Mrs. Whitker called, while checking in all the rooms. “Maybe she’s outside.” Mr. Brighton said. Mrs. Whitker let out a draining sigh whiling turning to Mr. Brighton to continue the conversation. “Pour girl, to lose both parents at the innocent age of 6 and to lose her grandmother at age 14. She has no one left. Mr. Brighton looked worried, so he said, “Yes, this is devastating, but what on earth are we going to do with her now?” “What do you mean, what are we going to do with her? The whole town has suffered a loss this past winter, no way anyone can afford an extra mouth to feed! The only thing to do is to give her over to the Orphanage, matter of fact, they should be here within an hour. Shocked, Mr. Brighton questioned, “A hour?” “Yes, I know it may seem a little unconventional on the day of the funeral, but honestly I had no other choice. Oh, look there’s Mrs. Darling, I just love her dress, please excuse me.” As they went their separate ways, neither one knew that Jenny was hiding in a small pocket between the steps and a lonely wall. It was the only place she felt no one could bother her. They also didn’t know that she heard everything! Jenny knew she couldn’t stay there forever and eventually someone would find her. So, she wiped her teary face and tried to shimmy her way up from the tight spot, but as she did her foot kicked in a loose board in the wall. Of course, that made a loud sound. She was still trying to get her foot unstuck from the hole where the board once was, when she heard footsteps getting close. She knew it wouldn’t look good if whoever was coming, was going to see her foot in the wall. As she wiggled her foot, she felt something that she’d kicked inside the wall. She couldn’t make out what it was and didn’t have time, because the footsteps had gotten really close. Finally, her foot popped out and she quickly pulled the board back in place on the wall. Everything happened just in time as Mrs. Whitker stood right in front of her, “Oh there you are dear, I have been looking high and low for you!” Mrs. Whitker extended her hand toward jenny to help her out of her hiding spot. Jenny reluctantly accepts Mrs. Whitker's offer of a hand. “Now let’s go upstairs and get you all cleaned up and a little rest, I have a surprise for you, I will tell you about it later.” Obviously, Jenny already knew about the surprise, but seeing there was nothing she could do about any of it, she proceeded to go upstairs, get washed up and lay down. After a long day she quickly fell asleep.
