literature
Whether written centuries ago or just last year, literary couples show that love is timeless.
Nathaniel
Chapter one: The Reason in Unreasonable He struck his shimmering sword into the hot golden sand beneath his feet and fell to one knee. “Nathaniel!” yelled Israfael as he flew over Nathaniel’s fallen silhouette and into the battlefield, but all Nathaniel could hear was the echoes of laughter that once filled his realm.

The Absence of You
It was a rainy day, you know, the ones that make you think of him. Where the cold isn’t a temperature, but a reminder of the absence of what was. Morning ritual: coffee - black, and with enough sugar to call it a dessert. I take my meds on time now, anti-depressants, as I reminisce on the days where I was lucky enough to forfeit my mental health and say to myself “I’ll take it later”. I’m sure I had nightmares, but like usual this morning I didn’t wake up with the clarity of what happened, which is probably a good thing. I carry the dazed and hungover feeling I’m left with instead, and like clockwork, I wonder how I manage to feel like this without an ounce of alcohol the night before.

Brother's Ticket Keeper
The scratch-off ticket was an odd present. Ridley’s brother, Joseph, had stopped exchanging gifts with him when they were teenagers. Ridley felt a little bad that he hadn’t gotten his brother anything, but then again, Ridley was pretty sure the scratch-off was a gag gift.

Pirouette
Daily Journal Entry - Another exhausting day! Wake up at 5:00 am, meditate, dance, shower and open the cafe. I work all day long, take orders, brew tea or coffee till 6:00 pm, clean up afterwards. And finally, sit down with mint tea to journal before bed.

Espoir
When I woke everyone had left the theater and all the lights were on. “Rise and shine,” Cody said. “Dang I fell asleep again.” “Long day?” “Yea.” I helped him clean the popcorn and candy wrappers and paper cups from between the seats and aisles then he cut out the lights and we stood in the dark lobby of the theater. “See you tomorrow?” “What’s playing?” “The Divine Nymph. Old seventies Italian film. It’s one of my all times.” “Yea I’ll be here. Save my seat.”

January Windfall
“It's not so bad… I suppose,” Astrid penned into her little black book. She isn’t sure how long she has owned this book, but it always seems to have one more blank page, room for one more story. It was once the keeper of inspiration and grandiose stories, now a crypt to unfinished adventures and epics turned tragedy. She gently replaces the book on her nightstand and looks at the clock; 9:17 am. Soft grey light filtering through dusty linen curtains, another snowy January morning inviting her to drift back to sleep.

Live or Die by the Book
I am late. My heels are clicking on the sidewalk as I will my legs to move faster. I am supposed to give the eulogy at my professor’s funeral. Why did I agree to it? I took several philosophy classes from him, a sweet older man who always dressed impeccably. I did tend to ask lots of questions, visit his office pretty regularly and help him with his computer issues. I guess everyone figured I knew him well. He must not have any relatives.
