Omar's Diary to 12th February 2022

Downing Street, Integrity in High Places and the ongoing saga of Man Servant's technological abilities

Quite a big gap since my last diary (Omar’s Diary November 2021). No excuses apart from paraphrasing Oscar Wild in that “Life is the curse of the writing classes”. Despite this gap rest assured that everyone resident here at Omar Towers is keeping well.

On with the serious stuff.

DOWNING STREET

Once again it must be very upsetting for “Larry” the resident feline of Downing Street to be witnessing history. This time a very protracted scandal about events that took place in his house that ostensibly were in contravention of the COVID regulations the rest of the country were subject to.

Man Servant and I saw this morning (Saturday 12th February 2022) that the Metropolitan Police have sent emails to fifty of the servants who either live in Downing Street or work there asking them to answer questions about what went on. The police should have sent fifty one such emails. The extra one being sent to Larry as I have every confidence that were he to be asked the same questions he would answer them all with brevity, accuracy and integrity.

It is quite shocking and a source of national embarrassment that the police have had to get involved.

In an idle moment, of which there are few, Man Servant and I did some research to establish when the police last made enquiries into activities in Downing Street. Our searches proved to be fruitless and so the situation today is truly unprecedented which is quite shocking. So, Larry you will always be welcome here at Omar Towers should life become to difficult for you in Downing Street.

INTEGRITY IN HIGH PLACES

In the 1970’s, so Man Servant assures me as it was well before my time, there was a Chancellor in charge of what was called West Germany. He was powerful and able to do back channel deals both domestically and internationally to achieve his political ambitions. He was also popular and had just won another term in office in a general election. Soon after that election success it began to emerge that one of his aides was a spy. Before the scandal became the story rather than what the Chancellor was doing for his country the Chancellor resigned from office. Subsequently it was established that he was not involved or implicated with his aide’s spying activities, and he was exonerated.

He did the right thing.

Here are some quotes on “integrity”:

The supreme quality for leadership is integrity – Dwight D Eisenhower

Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching – C S Lewis

If you read this diary Larry please share these quotes with your servants.

MAN SERVANT’S TECHNOLOGICAL INEPTITUDE (cotd)

As mentioned in the previous diary the remote unit for the television failed. Lady Servant was convinced it was “broken”. Man Servant was almost convinced it was broken because of over use but he did have a solution.

“Maybe the batteries are flat” he declared and promptly set about changing them which is quite an achievement for him at the best of times.

The new batteries were installed, and expectations were high as the lid was closed on the remote. He handed it to Lady Servant and once again nothing happened. A new one was ordered that night and arrived the next day.

I still find this amazing as the remote was delivered in less than twenty-four hours and like some of my own comestibles, came all the way from the Amazon.

Man Servant fitted new batteries and handed the new unit to Lady Servant, who pressed some buttons. Nothing happened. A conversation ensued about sending the remote back but as it only cost £5 was it worth the effort? Later that day Man Servant went to the local hardware store and amongst other things bought some more batteries. He fitted some to the old remote unit and amazingly it worked.

Subsequently the new remote unit was passed on to the artist in residence at Peg’s Pony Pictures. Her own remote was masticated beyond functionality by her resident canine. We have since heard that despite new batteries and every technological effort the remote unit still does not work.

I leave it to you to decide about Man Servant’s technological abilities.
