Laziness and Classics

As one of the most important German musicians of the 19th century, he loved music from a young age. At the age of 18, he entered the most famous Berlin Conservatory of Music to study composition and symphony conducting. There were two manual lessons a day at the conservatory because for more than a hundred years before that, conductors had no symbolic tools. Some bandmasters like to push off with their feet. Step out of rhythm. Some like to wield handkerchiefs, and at that time the most popular is to use a heavy ten jin iron rod conductor, a conductor carrying the iron rod according to the rhythm of poking face, issued a "bang bang bang" sound.

Therefore, at that time, the orchestra director would be tired every time he finished a performance, so the physical demands on the students in the college were also very high. Every time the teacher gave a lesson to the students, Spo would hate this iron rod from the bottom of his heart. It was meaningless for him to spend so much energy on this iron rod as a conductor. He felt so tired of the iron bar. How can conductors concentrate all their energy on conducting music?

When Spaugh proposed this idea, the teacher criticized him mercilessly: "The iron rod is the most sacred conducting tool, which conductor can live without it?"

The teacher also told the students that there was a musician in France who was conducting when he was ill. As a result, his strength failed and he accidentally dropped an iron bar on his instep. Later, he died of infection and festering.

Spaugh made no reply, but thought to himself, "The musician's spirit is worthy of recognition, and his suffering worthy of sympathy, but was his sacrifice worth it?" Spaugh had his answer in mind.

From then on, whenever we were practicing arm strength, Spaugh would pretend to be sick and hide in the classroom or dormitory to study music. Although his arm strength was not as strong as his classmates, because he put more energy into music, his attrition was far higher than all the other students.

After graduation, he became a violinist and behind-the-scenes composer with Germany's most famous symphony orchestra. In 1820, Spaugh went with the band to London, England, to give a royal performance. Upon arriving in England, the conductor of the band fell ill. He could hardly stand up, let alone lift such a heavy iron bar. What if the orchestra had only one conductor, even though there were several substitute musicians with it, and the performance could not be delayed by this? When everyone was worried about this, Spaugh said to the conductor, "Let me lead."

Although the conductor was somewhat repelled by the lazy young man, he had no choice but to accept him in a foreign country.

Unexpectedly, on the day of the show, Spaugh did not show up with the iron bar. Instead, he carries an elaborate wooden stick as a conducting instrument, which is very light and can make a very beautiful melody line in the air, because his body is not tied to the iron bar, and he has very beautiful body movements.

As a result, Spaugh's conduct was recognized by everyone present and the performance was an unprecedented success.

This successful performance quickly made Spaugh the new conductor of the band, and Spaugh has been using this light and tough white wooden stick as a conducting tool, which was soon copied by conductors all over the world, and has been popular in the world since then. For hundreds of years, it has become an immortal classic.
