Kate Middleton Met a Baby in Italy and William's Worst Fears Came True

If Prince William had one thing to worry about during Kate's solo trip to Italy, it was probably this his wife coming home absolutely smitten with someone else's newborn and immediately suggesting they have a fourth child.

And sure enough, it happened within hours of her landing.

Kate, 44, was doing a walkabout in Reggio Emilia's town square on May 13 when she spotted a tiny three-month-old girl named Elena being held near the crowd barriers. By all accounts, the Princess of Wales completely melted. Her whole face softened, she crouched right down to the baby's level with a massive smile, and spent several minutes cooing over her.

For anyone who knows Kate, this was entirely predictable. She's been nicknamed the "Children's Princess" for exactly this kind of warm, genuine moment and she's also a mum to Prince George (12), Princess Charlotte (11), and Prince Louis (8), so she knows her way around a baby.

William Literally Warned Us About This

Back in 2022 during a royal tour of Denmark, Kate herself admitted that meeting babies is a bit of an occupational hazard for her.

"It makes me very broody," she said at the time. "William always worries about me meeting under one-year-olds. I come home saying, 'Let's have another one.'"

So yes, William saw this coming from miles away.

The Crowds Went Wild for Her

The baby moment was just one highlight of what sounds like a genuinely lovely day. Thousands of people lined up at Piazza Camillo Prampolini, the town's historic square, just to catch a glimpse of her. Kate shook hands, posed for selfies, accepted flowers, and crouched down to chat with kids.

She even surprised everyone by speaking Italian to the children despite previously joking that she is "so bad" at the language. Kate actually studied abroad in Florence back in 2000, so she's not completely starting from scratch, but still the crowd loved it.

One local, Teresa Salerno, told PEOPLE she was left trembling after shaking Kate's hand. "She had an aura of light and goodness and sweetness," she said. "It was incredible seeing her."

A local teacher who met her added, "To think that this is the first trip since her illness is unimaginable" a nod to Kate's cancer diagnosis in March 2024 and her remission announcement in January 2025.

So Why Is She in Italy?

Beyond the baby-meeting and the selfies, Kate's trip has a real purpose behind it. She's in Reggio Emilia specifically to learn more about the Reggio Emilia approach a globally respected philosophy of early childhood education that originated in this very city after World War II, built around the idea that children are naturally curious and capable learners who thrive with the right environment and support.

Kate's Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood is expanding internationally, and Reggio Emilia is a natural stop given how closely the city's educational philosophy aligns with her own early years mission.

As one local teacher put it, "When she started her early childhood project I always thought that sooner or later she would come here. I can see why she came to Reggio Emilia because her vision is so similar to ours."

The trip runs May 13 to 14 and whether or not William has anything to worry about on the baby front, it's safe to say Italy gave Kate a very warm welcome.
