In 2013, the UN started this event in response to Bhutan's promotion of national happiness. As we celebrate the International Day of Happiness, we become more aware of how important happiness is to our health and productivity. On July 12, 2012, the United Nations General Assembly announced March 20 as the International Day of Happiness through its resolution 66/281. The first celebration of the International Day of Happiness event took place in 2013 and has since served as a means of acknowledging the significance of happiness in the lives of people worldwide.
