Abu Dhabi is the bustling capital of the United Arab Emirates. With a beachfront location, Abu Dhabi draws tourists from all over the world. Until the discovery of oil, the city was a fishing village. The revenues derived from the oil industry transformed the city into the glamorous city that it is today. Abu Dhabi offers plenty of attractions to be enjoyed. If you are looking for some off-the-beaten-path experiences, this list is meant for you.

1. Kayaking tours at the Eastern Mangroves

The idea of mangroves in a desert city like Abu Dhabi sounds unlikely, but Abu Dhabi is a well-rounded tourist destination that offers every kind of experience. Found along the shore, the Eastern Mangroves are rich in biodiversity and brings contrast to the city's glass exterior. Tours vary from 1.5 hours to 3 hours, depending on your level of experience and age. A boat tour of this kind will educate you on the importance of the ecology of mangroves; it is also a chance to see the remainder of Abu Dhabi's forests. The Eastern Mangroves are an easy journey from a lot of Abu Dhabi beach resorts.

2. Sir Bani Yas Island

A short break from the city of Abu Dhabi and a short drive from Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Yamm Villa Resort, Sir Bani Yas Island doesn't seem to grab the attention of tourists as much as it should. This wildlife reserve is home to endemic species like cheetahs, jackals, hyenas, Arabian Oryx, and gazelles. Among the introduced animals are leopards and giraffes. The park offers a collection of activities, including walking tours, 4x4 tours, horse-riding tours, hiking, and biking.

3. Mina Market

This is one of the most exciting spots in the city. Not many tourists are aware of the existence of the market, but it should be on every list of things to do in Abu Dhabi. Mina Market is open from morning to evening with a collection of stalls selling everything you could possibly want. From flowers to fresh produce to seafood, you can find anything and everything here. The market is always packed with locals who want to buy stuff or simply hang out. Mina Market is one of the most authentic experiences Abu Dhabi offers its visitors.

4. Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

For a complete Abu Dhabi experience, a tourist must visit the Falcon Hospital. It's a working hospital that treats ill and injured falcons. The onsite museum gives you an insight into the history of falconry; the hospital also offers tours. Visitors can get up close with falcons and hold them as long as there's a staff member present.

5. Boat tours

To see the skyline of the city in its best form, you need to head out onto the water. Abu Dhabi offers several boat tours that include sunset cruises and island-hopping tours. Abu Dhabi's glittering skyscrapers are best viewed from aboard a boat. Choose a sunset cruise for a romantic activity with your partner.

6. Desert safaris

This is another activity that can be enjoyed away from the city. Desert safaris are a must-do Abu Dhabi activity – the most popular day trip or night trip from the city centre is a desert safari to the Empty Quarter. This is where you find the largest sand dunes in the Middle East and the whole world. These dunes are perfect for camel trekking, sandboarding, and camping. Most day trips and night trips include a visit to a camel farm in the desert. If you don't have a lot of time to spare, evening safaris are your best choice.
