How I Feel About What's Happening to Ekweremadu - Nkem Owoh
Nkem Owoh gets honest

In case you're not already familiar with what is happening, the former deputy president of the Nigerian senate, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, have been charged with the crime of conspiring to arrange the travel of a 21 year-old from Lagos into the UK in order to harvest organs. On 5 May 2023, Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months imprisonment.
During a new interview with Inspiration 92.3FM, Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh most popularly known for playing the character of Osuofia, gave his thoughts on the Ekweremadu case. Here is what the popular Nigerian actor had to say.

During the interview, Nkew Owoh was asked: "The British sentencing of a whole deputy senate president, Ekweremadu, has happened. He is to serve 9.8 years. What is your reaction to that?" He said:
NKEM OWOH: Very unfortunate. Very very unfortunate. Because I am reacting based on what I have seen happen in other places with other people, in other climes. My anger is that I didn't see so much effort from Nigerian government. This man was the second in command of our senate. Whatever happens, I see and I watch and I have moved around the world, I have gone to places. And I normally interact with the people to find out what their cultures are in their own clime. I know that any country that values its personalities will always fight for them somehow. And I was waiting to see a situation where the federal government or even the senate itself would put some small pressure, even though nobody is condoning what he did.
"But I remember Olusegun Obasanjo wrote a letter to London seeking for some pardon or so?"
NKEM OWOH: Exactly, but it didn't come directly from government, and it even came too late because they would have started this thing very early. Look at this American government, there was this trans basketballer, the American government made it very open "please don't do anything to this girl", they gave their conditions so you will have kind of respect. But if you stay so silent, to me it begins to seem like your government isn't active at all, on things that involve the citizens in other countries.
"But there is one hard fact though which is that he was accused of human trafficking which is an offense in any law, and that's a big one."
NKEM OWOH: I know. It is a very big one. I'm not saying that the government should come and say no, he didn't do it. I'm saying that you see, governance without empathy, it doesn't favor the citizens. If you had come out to say "we know he did this but" earlier enough, but everybody just kept mute. And that thing is not in the laws of Nigeria. They did wrong, from what we have heard. They did wrong but the government didn't show - this is number two man in their senate for goodness sake - if they had said one or two things or started doing something to soften whatever mind the judge has on it, we would accept it. But this one nobody was talking till recently when Obasanjo talked.
