A package wrapped in brown paper,

Sitting on the top shelf

Everyone knows what’s inside,

They just haven’t seen it for themselves.

Everyone has their own journey,

Different paths on the climb

Some succeed and obtain it,

But some fall and get left behind

You attend your favorite college

Choosing the major that you love,

You make so many friends,

And climb one shelf above.

You’ve been there for one year

It’s just as fun as you started

You enjoy all the parties

You’re following the course that you charted

Some more time goes by,

But you start to feel a bit tired

You knew this was the path you wanted

But not that so much work was required

A year has now passed

And you call school a waste of time

Why would I stay at this place

When I’m bored out of my mind?

You drop out- school is pointless

Thinking all that stress is done

But then loans dropped onto your shoulders

And knocked you down one

You’ll just find a good job,

And you can pay off all your debt

You even go stay with your parents

Until you’re all set

Just as you expected,

You find a job quick,

And lucky for you

It’s someplace that doesn’t make you sick

You meet lots of new people,

This new job is great!

You get so many new opportunities

Right out the gate

You’re back on the shelf above

You’re officially on your way!

You’re about to reach what some only dream of-

Some who went astray

Your work friends invite you to get drinks

Of course you accept,

But you stayed out so late that night

The next day you overslept

Just a few minutes late,

It’s not like I’ll be fired

But you feel groggy and can’t complete your work

Because you’re so tired

You run into a friend while working

They invite you back out

You accept- It’s a Friday

That’s what Friday’s are all about

You go to the bar

You sit and drink for a while

You spot a nice looking person

And approach them with a smile

Next day you wake up

They’re lying there in your bed

You barely remember what happened

As pain is throbbing in your head

Though you forgot about the night

You know you had a good time

You should do this everyday!

You start again on your climb

You start to go out a lot

But soon you start desiring more

You feel like you aren’t getting anywhere-

Like you’re on the same shelf as before

All of your late nights catch up to you

Always showing up to work late

Your boss tell you that you’re fired,

You can’t keep working in your state

After getting let go,

You try to drown your feelings with booze

It doesn’t matter anyway…

Not like you’ve got anything to lose

You meet someone one day

Who invites you to their house

They say they have a shortcut to the box-

At first you have doubts

I mean it wouldn’t hurt to try…

I have to reach the box somehow

And anything would help lot better

Than what I’m doing now

So you accept the mans invite

You’ve been at the party half an hour

Until someone comes out with bags

Filled with a substance similar to flour

You see the lines on the table,

This could have been the solution after all

You hunch over with the rolled dollar,

You take a sniff

And you fall

You’re sitting in a dark room

You run, but there’s nothing in sight

You scream for help, but it’s useless

You sit and cry

Is this now your life?

A package wrapped in brown paper,

Sitting on the top shelf

Everyone knows what’s inside,

They just haven’t seen it for themselves.
