Good Deeds NEVER go unnoticed

The little black book challenge

Fuck! My alarm goes off every day at 5:30 am and I’m never ready for it no matter how early I go to bed. Ugh. I brush my disheveled locs out of my face and plant my feet on the floor. Rise and grind, thank God for a new day. I hit the radio on and hop in the shower to do my normal routine. Shit, shower, shave, brush my teeth, get really dressed to impressed, and head out the door. I’m a working college student striving to make a living in the concrete jungle. I’m moving and shaking in the hustle and bustle of the big city. Little did I know today wouldn’t just be a normal Monday.

I’m waiting on the bus jamming to my favorite music boosting my spirits for the task of today to be bearable. The bus finally pulls up, when I hop on I notice the bus is extra crowded today a lot of elderly so I knew I would be standing the whole ride. I’m cool with it. There’s some noise coming from behind me where this lady and this guy were exchanging words because the woman felt the dude was too close to her. “Don’t touch my ass again!” “Move!” “Back up!” I’m like y’all keep it cool we all scrunched right now, it’s crowded like a flea market in here. A few people laughed but they kept going, eventually, the woman pushes the guy and he starts to restrain her things get really hectic. I push my way back between them and get into the guy’s face. The driver is forced to pull over and escort the guy off the bus and the lady. I’m pissed because now I’m gonna be late for class and I already got a warning. As the rowdy passengers push by me the lady drops a little black notebook in my hands and rushes off. I yell after her “Ma’am you left your book!” “Hey lady, you dropped your book!” she continued to blend deeper into the crowd until she was out of eyesight. I couldn’t afford to chase her I was already late I brushed it off put the book in my pocket and got back to my playlist.

I arrived on campus feeling anxious, I rushed to class. The images of my morning playing in my head. I get to class and sink into my chair the professor gives me the eye but continues on with the lecture. I tap my friend Sean on the shoulder and ask for his notes after class so I catch up on what I missed. After class, I go to the library for a short study break before my final class. I grab a burrito on the way. When I got ready to pay I realized I still had the little black book in my pocket. I pull it out and examine it. On the outside, the book is old and tattered. There was a gold leaf that imprinted into the cover but had faded over some time now. I quickly thumb through it to see if I can find any contact info. I don’t see any information related to the owner so I could return it. So, I start looking through it to see what exact information is housed inside. I find pages of reflection of the woman’s life and how her husband died. In the middle of the book was a key and a note attached. The words on the piece of paper say: “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” (Mother Theresa.) On the back of the note was another note. The note reads:

“Dear, angel. If you’re reading this it is not by chance that we met. I prayed for someone to come into my path to bless me. I had given up on the world and those that have the capacity to love. You have restored my faith. I was left a large estate by my deceased husband and I have made it my mission to use the funds to make those lightworkers’ lives worth living. Good people usually are unsung heroes who maintain the balance between good and evil on earth. Take this gift and remember to never stop caring for your fellow man. We all need each other no matter how big or how small always show your light. We need you.”

Ps: Go to E. 64th St. New York, NY 10065

Check the mailbox for a brown envelope.

I quickly stuff the note and key back into the book and put the book into my bookbag. I will follow up with this after my last class, I say to myself. I breeze through psychology and catch the next bus uptown. I glance back at the address and start booking it to the location. I arrive and see a nice renovated apartment space. It looked like the tenant had been gone for a while, noting the covers on the furniture inside I could see through the window. I walk up the steps and see the mailbox looking ajar. I quickly go look and see a plethora of envelopes all crammed into the small flap opening, then I see a small brown envelope stuffed at the bottom of the box, I pull it out and tear it open. Another note falls out with a check. I make sure I catch the check before it blows away. I sit on the stoop staring at the check in my hand. It stares back at me in the sum of $ 75,000. I quickly read the note:

“It is not by chance you receive this gift. “Every time you do a good deed you shine the light a little farther into the dark. And the thing is when you’re gone that light is going to keep shining on, pushing the shadows back.” Fill in your name on the check and cash it within seven days of receiving the book. Continue to be great. May this change your perspective on life and the importance of love.”

I stuffed the note and check in my pocket and cried in my hands. I cried hard. The tears were a culmination of the blood, sweat, tears nobody knew I put in just to make it to this point right here; just to be alive. I struggled all my life to make ends meet. I didn’t have a support system that was strong. Responsibilities were starting to suffocate me. I kept the faith and God answered. From that day forward I never stood by during the times people would try to disrespect or harm others in my presence. I always kept this experience in my mind. You never know who is watching, treat everyone well, you could be entertaining angels.
