At this point, if you've been following my page or entertainment news in general in Nigeria, then you know that the decision by the Nigerian Official Selection Committee for the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts to not submit any movie for the 2023 Oscars has been causing quite the surge of emotions amongst the people in the industry who hoped this would be their year. Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has been the most vocal about this issue but now, actor Deyemi Okanlawon who acted in one of the movies not picked, Elesin Oba, is pouring his heart out about how he feels about the snub he got from the Selection Committee. Taking to Twitter, Deyemi had a lot to say about the issue. Here's what he said.

Deyemi in Elesin Oba - one of the movies not selected

Taking to Twitter, Deyemi posted saying:

So that't how I didn't make it to the Oscars this year... sigh we keep moving. So that's how I didn't make it to the #Oscars this year! We all worked so hard on #ElesinOba #TheKingsHorseman but this industry seems designed to frustrate talent. Sigh... we keep moving. Hard guy but this thing touch me! Those saying try again nxt yr - see how many yrs it took Leonardo to get an #Oscar after yrs of excptionl work in excptionl films? How many excptionl films does Nwood produce yearly? How many will I be cast in? I'm so done with this #heartbroken

Whenever I take on a role, regardless of our low pay or unfav circumstances, I give EVERYTHING and have consistently over-delivered as a performer, oftentimes to the detriment of my relationships and my mental and physical health. Not happy at all but leaving this in God's hands. I truly loved my character in Olunde in #ElesinOba and the film is one every Nigerian and African will be proud of! I highly recommend you see it at @EbonylifePlace from the 28th of October and whenever it comes out on @NetflixNaija.. omo I'm shedding tears as I type this sha. My dear Aunty @MoAbudu and Ebgon @kunleafolayan if I feel this way I can only imagine how you feel... #ElesinOba and #Anikulapo were both truly masterpieces in visual storytelling! Pls remember that as filmmakers your best is yet to come and we will all rise above this #Oscars.

After he finished making his posts, somebody pointed out to Deyemi that he does not need the Oscars for validation seeing that Africa has prestigious awarding bodies. Deyemi replied to them saying:

Bruv that's like saying "don't go to World Cup or Olympics bcos we have CAF etc"... it's not validation it's getting a chance to have your craft compete with the best in the world

What do you think about what Deyemi Okanlawon said? I do understand what he says about trying to compete with the best in the world. But what do you think? Let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment either below or on my Jide Okonjo Facebook post.
