There are three main functions of carbohydrates and those are to provide energy, fiber, and as a dietary catalyst to ensure proper brain, heart, and digestive system functioning.

That’s what we’ve been told and what’s being taught in most nutrition classes today, but is any truth in this? Could there be a huge crack in the carb theory no one is addressing and might that be the fuel for the current obesity epidemic?

If you go to most restaurants today, you’re greeted by a waiter who introduces him or herself and then “slaps” a breadbasket in front of you with a couple of packets of butter.

Oh wait, it might not be butter it could be margarine or worse yet butter substitute since the whole world believes the “okey doke” of high cholesterol causing heart disease.

Anyways, you’re sitting there starving no doubt when the bread hits the table, immediately you pick up a piece, bathe it in butter (or butter substitute icon smile Death By The Functions Of Carbohydrates ) and then the “carbocide” begins.

After eating the bread, you then order pasta, rice, or some sort of potato dish. You might even do the double whammy of eating the bread put on your table and then order a sandwich which is sometimes the case when we’re out to lunch.

We’ve been led like lambs to the slaughter in believing the body needs “carbs” and plenty of them to function properly. I ‘m talking in terms of “We” here because I fell for it hook, line, and sinker myself.

When I initially journeyed into the fitness industry, the norm was 6 small meals a day in order to speed up my metabolism. Those meals consisted of protein, carbs, and no fats.

So, I would pack my tupperware with chicken breasts, brown rice, and maybe on a good day I might add a vegetable. I had no idea that vegetables were carbohydrates, I just placed them in a little category all their own.

The Paleo Diet opened my eyes to the fact that vegetables were indeed carbs and I was impeding my own fat loss process by eating useless carbs like bread and pasta because I thought I needed them for energy.

One of the functions of carbohydrates is to provide energy as well as blood glucose regulation. The carbohydrates we’re eating today are doing anything but regulating blood glucose.

Think about it: bread, pasta, and potatoes are very high on the glycemic index. Matter of fact, two slices of wheat bread can raise your blood sugar levels more than a tablespoon of sugar!

Is that a good carb? How many diets out there suggest eating a turkey sandwich or any sandwich for that matter, as a means to reduce weight?

Well, didn’t the guy from the Subway commercials lose a ton of weight just eating sandwiches? He did, but practically no one knows he gained back 40 pounds before he started restricting calories again.

I ‘d be willing to bet he went back to eating high carb meals.

Another fallacy of carbohydrates is they’re needed for energy. Is this really true?

If that were the case, why do obese people seem to be the ones who lack energy? Most obese people got that way from health problems and consuming crazy amounts of carbohydrates.

Years ago, our ancestors didn’t have access to pasta, bread, and other goodies like we have today. Their diets consisted mainly of proteins and fats.

Is it a safe assumption that maybe we’ve been doing it a** backwards all this time? Most people want to burn fat but how can they when they are constantly dumping carbs back on the fat fire?

I remember when I started my own fat loss program, I would run on the treadmill and then go eat my “healthy turkey sandwich” or have a pasta dish with tuna. Total FAIL!

It would make a ton of sense if the body did prefer to use fat as its primary fuel (energy) source. Everyone has been taught to steer clear of fat and avoid it like the plague meanwhile we keep getting fatter as a nation.

It doesn’t seem to make sense that if we are avoiding fat and supposedly eating better, then why is everyone overweight? Something just ain’t adding up!

By the way, its been proven that people who consume more saturated fats in their diet release more weight.

Saturated fats help with the production of cholesterol. Cholesterol is needed for hormone production and brain function.

You can go a day or two without carbs in your diet with no effect to the brain but restrict fats (which produce cholesterol) and memory loss may result.

This is the main reason why statins (cholesterol lowering drugs) are being so highly scrutinized right now.

One of the last arguments for having carbohydrates in the diet is the fiber they provide but at what cost?

Wheat and other grains can wreck the intestinal tract.

I myself am gluten intolerant and had my bout with eating bread in the past and had to deal with foggy thinking and sleepiness after eating it.

Those were mild symptoms compared to those who deal with severe diarrhea from the inability to tolerate grains. Grains in the form of carbs can be a menace to our digestive system.

The irony lies in that their function is to assist the digestive system in operating optimally.

Ok, at this time you’re probably thinking I hate carbs. I’m not a hater of carbs if they come in the form of vegetables or fruit but in moderation. After all, everyone wants to burn fat but how can you if you have get through mountains of carbohydrates first?

I would go so far as to the say the functions of carbohydrates are literally and figuratively driving people to their deaths.
