A Hollywood Tragedy Unfolds

There's nothing sadder than for someone beloved to disappear off the face of the Earth without a trace. Sadly, that is the case for the Hollywood actor and star of many movies, Julian Sands. Whether it was on the big screen, or the small screen, Sands had a stage presence that was undeniable and was a talent that will remain unforgettable.

At the time of his disappearance, it's believed that the 65-year-old Sands was in the Baldy Bowl area of California. The conditions at the time made search and rescue efforts treacherous and unfortunately, he wasn't found.

January 13th, 2023

The San Bernardina County Sheriff's received the report that Julian Sands went missing while hiking on Friday the 13th. By 7:30 p.m. local time, the sheriff's department issued a statement that the 65-year-old Sands, who lived in North Hollywood with his wife, was reported missing in the Baldy Bowl Area.

January 14th, 2023

The news that no family wants to hear is that rescue operations come to a halt. Search and rescue crews looking for Sands were pulled off the mountain due to the risks of an avalanche and treacherous trail conditions. The search continued but with the use of drones.

January 15th, 2023

Authorities get the final ping off Sands' cell phone on Sunday, indicating that his phone died shortly after.

January 18th, 2023

A car believed to be Sands' is found by crews during a search operation. The vehicle was towed away from the area of Mount Baldy, California.

January 19th, 2023

It's day seven and Sands' son is allowed to join the ground search for their father, retracing the route the family believed he would have taken, along with the help of an experienced climber. Sands's remains unfound.

January 23, 2023

It's the tenth day since the disappearance of the beloved father, husband, and actor. The National Weather Service reports high winds affecting the mountain region in the area, making search efforts treacherous. Sands' family thanks authorities for their heroism.

Five Months Later

It's been five months and while the family still holds him in their hearts, his fans keep him and his family in their prayers, there may have been a trace of the actor found, ending the saga on a tragic note.

Human remains were found in the California Mountain Range area where authorities and rescue teams spent months searching for Sands. When looking back at the time period, the California Mountain ranges at the first of the year were hit with heavy weather, snow, and dangerous conditions, making it all the more likely that even a hiking and mountain enthusiast like Sands could run into life-threatening trouble.

A pair of hikers reported finding Remains Saturday morning in the Mount Baldy wilderness area, near where Sands went missing in January. The remains have been retrieved and taken to the coroner's office for positive identification and to determine the cause of death.

Sands was born in the United Kingdom and it's arguable what he's best known for. Will it be his role in the 1985 film "A Room With a View?" Just as an opinion, it may be for his many television roles or his starring role as Warlock, a time traveler Warlock that comes to the present day to escape being killed for practicing witchcraft and dark magics. Sands was also in the 1990 movie Arachnophobia and has an impressive list of television credits, including playing one season against Jack Bauer on 24.
