Here are several new years rituals and how they are done and what each one represents

1. Pomegranate smash. The pomegranate smash originates in Greece. At exactly midnight you smash the pomegranate on the ground in front of your front door. The more seeds that come out of the pomegranate the more good luck you will receive throughout the year. When you enter the house for the first time after you finish this ceremony. You must enter the house on the right foot to symbolize starting the new year off on the right foot.

2. 12 grapes at midnight. This tradition originates in Mexico. The tradition states you make 12 wishes. You eat all 12 grapes one per wish while thinking of the 12 wishes. You have 12 seconds to eat all 12 grapes.

3. Eat pork on new years day. I have no idea where this tradition originates however I have been doing this my entire life. The pig symbolizes abundance of resources because pigs are usually fat. Most commonly due to the abundance of their resources.

4. Black eyed peas. This ritual according to my research originates in the southern United States. It is the most followed tradition In the united states. According to this tradition when served with greens of any kind the black eyed peas represent coins and the greens represent paper money. Cornbread paired with this represents gold.

5. Greens. this tradittion originates from the southern united states Any green vegetable what so ever. So long as its green it does not matter

This represents money paper money the more you eat the more money you will make and receive during the year to come.

6. Do a cleansing. this tradition originates from the native american smudging with a twist. You do a smudging on your room where you sleep. Your aim is to cleanse all the problems of the last year away from you. So you can start the year fresh and with a clean slate.

7. Make some noise. This tradition has an unknown origin. This tradition states that at 11:59 and 55 seconds until 05 seconds after midnight. you start the noise makers and start blowing horns, sirens Clapping any loud noises. This is said to scare the evil spirits away or keep them at bay until well after the new year.

8. Write down what you want to leave behind in the new years. this tradition originates in the wiccan practice and is often refered to as witchcraft. On a blank piece of paper write down 12 things you wish to leave behind in the year that has passed. Fold the paper away from you symbolizing these things leaving you. On a separate piece of paper you write down 12 things you wish to gain in the new year.

You then burn the paper completely then in the nearest body of water to you. Then release the ashes into the water for these things to be carried away from you.

On the other paper where you write down the 12 wishes do the following thing. Fold the paper towards you symbolizing these things coming to you. Some people may even say “I fold these things into you.”

9. Jump 7 waves. This tradition originates in Brazil the tradition states that at midnight you go to the ocean or the lake. And jump 7 waves. According to the tradition you get one wish for every wave you jump over. It’s not clear whether or not you have to clear the waves. But according to what I have read as long as you make the effort to jump the waves your wishes should be granted.

10. The three potatoes. this tradition originates in columbia. If you’re feeling risky you will love this one. But be very careful because you could potentially curse yourself. You take 3 potatoes you leave one un-peeled you completely un-peel another one. And the third potato you half peel only you place them under the bed and the first potato you touch you pull it out from under the bed. The fully peeled potato means you will have extreme financial problems throughout the next year. The half peeled potato means you will be okay financially. And the un-peeled potato means extreme financial abundance more money than you know what to do with.
