Time To Enjoy The Little Things: 'Zombieland 2' Ready To Bring Back The Original Cast
Now, the film has come crawling out of the rotting grave it fell into with some news on where the hell Zombieland 2 is.
We all remember the rules of surviving Zombieland; whether it be the double tap or working on your cardio, Ruben Fleischer's film had us splitting our sides in the midst of an army of the undead. #Zombieland was heralded as the American Shaun of the Dead and would surely deserve a second outing. However, it seemed like the apocalypse was over when the 2009 film failed to spawn a sequel. For nearly a decade now, we have been talking about whether we will ever see Columbus, Wichita, Little Rock, or Tallahassee again. Now, the film has come crawling out of the rotting grave it fell into with some news on where the hell Zombieland 2 is.
Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed that not only is the script for the part #horror, part #comedy complete, but that the film intends to reunite ALL of the original stars. Speaking to ComicBook.com, the pair revealed:
It is [in active development]. We’re trying to get it going. All of our cast have read the script and love it. Ruben [Fleischer] is signed on. It’s just a matter of making our cast deals and making it for a budget number. All the cast have become superstars now so, we made Zombieland with 20 million, so it’s trying to fit that financial model into the sequel model so it makes sense for the studio and being able to pay the actors what they now get paid and deserve to paid."
Shuffling Toward A Sequel
Zombieland was near perfect, #JesseEisenberg with his geeky charm, #EmmaStone as the beautiful vixen, #AbigailBreslin as the loud-mouth kid, and #WoodyHarrelson as the obnoxious leader. Round this off with a quest for Twinkies, more zombie splattering than The Walking Dead, as well as a Bill Murray cameo, and it was one of 2009's best films.
There would need to be some serious time jump, especially considering that Breslin was still a fresh-faced kid when she stepped into the role of Little Rock and has since grown up a lot thanks to the likes of Scream Queens. Eisenberg has taken over Metropolis, Harrelson has been a "true" detective, and Stone has scooped up a golden statue. While the actor's superstar credentials and considerable paypacket might get in the way of proceedings, the duo are refusing to let go of their Zombieland dreams:
"We see [Sony Pictures chairman] Tom Rothman pretty frequently now and we’re pestering that dude. He’s like, ‘Please, enough with the 'Zombieland' talk!’ We’re pestering him the way we pestered Fox on 'Deadpool.' We’re not letting it go. We really want to see 'Zombieland 2.'"
Well, if it worked for Deadpool, then why not for Zombieland? The pair most recently worked on the alien lifeform-lead Life, but promise that Zombieland 2 is always at the forefront of their minds.
With Fleischer back on board as well, the news has all the makings of a great sequel on Sony's hands. The only question is though, with a release likely to be a decade after the original, will the stench of cheap cash-in be ripe in the air when/if we see Zombieland 2?
