THE WOMB

MOVIE REVIEW

By RAJA SELVARAJPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Netflix has released a new horror movie called "The Womb" , which centers around a pregnant woman who is not plagued by horror within herself but by her surroundings. This Indonesian movie (org. title: Inang) is relatable due to its universal starting point, with a pregnant woman at the heart of the story.

"The Womb" is a horror-thriller film that also incorporates some slow-burn drama throughout its runtime. However, what sets it apart from other movies in the genre is its emphasis on the story, which is revealed in the third act. Many viewers can relate to the movie's story in some way, making it a must-watch for horror enthusiasts. The film is now available to watch on Netflix from February 16, 2023.

Another horror film, "Mind Leech" (2023), has also caught the attention of audiences due to its unexpected relatability. Although some elements of the story may not be easily understood by Western audiences, it revolves around a young woman grappling with an unplanned pregnancy.

The father of the child is only interested in providing financial support for her to get rid of the baby, leaving her with little to no choice.

The young woman's initial response is to get angry, but that does not alleviate her struggles. She turns to Facebook and discovers a support group, through which she comes across a mysterious older couple looking to adopt. She moves in with them after becoming homeless, and they are the nicest and kindest people she has ever met. However, it is a horror movie, and when something seems too good to be true, it usually is.

As with "The Womb," pregnancy and horror are a perfect combination, as evidenced by popular horror movies like "Rosemary's Baby" (1968) and "À l'intérieur" (2007). The three horror films released in 2023, including "The Womb" and "Mind Leech," are all perfect examples of this.

While "The Womb" is a classic horror story, the emotional core of the film's narrative is its true strength. Director Fajar Nugros, making his debut in the horror genre, expertly creates a suspenseful and terrifying atmosphere. Although the film features a few jump scares, it is the story itself that is intended to be frightening, rather than a few scattered moments of horror.

Overall, "The Womb" is a solid horror movie, albeit a little too long with a runtime of almost two hours. However, the movie's screenplay by Deo Mahameru and its powerful story make it a must-watch for horror enthusiasts. The actions of certain characters in the movie are brutal, but there is a reason behind their actions, making it a cut above other horror movies.

The Womb is a classic example of pregnant women and horror coming together. In this Indonesian movie, like many other horror stories, a new life brings about the fear and anxiety that come with the unknown.

The Bone Woman (Huesera) and Baby Ruby are two other 2023 horror films with pregnant women as the central character that provide a mix of psychological and emotional drama with horror elements.

In The Womb, director Fajar Nugros demonstrates a firm grip on creating situations that deliver both suspense and horror. Although the movie runs for almost two hours, it doesn't feel that way due to the compelling story that propels the plot forward.

The screenplay by Deo Mahameru and the film's emotional core drive the plot. The actions of some of the characters are brutal, but there is a reason behind them that is more complex than what most horror movies provide.

Overall, The Womb is a solid horror movie that balances suspense, horror, and a relatable story. It's definitely one to watch when it comes out on Netflix.
