Horror movies are awesome; no questions asked. But if you don't know where to begin, I've compiled a list for you of the horror movies that you need to watch.

1. 'The Shining'

This is one of the most popular horror movies of all time. Directed by Stanley Kubrick, The Shining was released 1980 and stars Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. It was based on the novel written by the king of horror, Stephen King.

The movie features a family who moves to the Overlook Hotel to keep watch over it during the winter months. A terrible storm snows the family in.

Fun Fact: The Shining is where the term "REDRUM" comes from.

This movie is often categorized as a psychological thriller and a scenic horror film. From deranged writers to creepy twins to a young boy with telepathic abilities, The Shining offers something for everyone.

2. 'The Witch'

Robert Eggers' debut film, The Witch, captivated audiences when it was released in 2015. Set in America in the 1600's the film follows a family who has recently been forced to leave their gated Puritan town to face the new world all alone.

The oldest daughter, Thomasin (played by Anya Taylor-Joy), is playing peekaboo with her youngest brother when suddenly he vanishes.

The family continues to be terrorized by the family goat, Black Phillip, who turns out to be the devil.

If you've always been interested in the Salem witch trials, I highly recommend watching this movie.

3. 'It'

Can we all agree that clowns are creepy?!

Even if you don't usually spook at the sight of clowns, I bet that watching this movie will make you sleep with your nightlight on.

The newest version of this movie was released in 2017 and was adapted from, you guessed it, Stephen King's 1986 novel.

The film follows a young group of friends who are being terrorized by Pennywise, an evil clown who appears every 27 years to eat children.

This newer horror film has captivated both young and older horror fans and definitely worthy of its place on this list.

4. 'The Babadook'

This Australian horror movie was released in 2014 and directed by Jennifer Kent. It features a mother, Amelia, and her young son, Samuel. One night, a book appears in Sam’s room. His mother isn’t quite sure where it came from, but she decides to read it to him anyways.

The Babadook, a tall, black creature, begins to terrorize the family. Filled with anxiety, depression, and grief, Amelia is forced to deal with the monster by herself.

By the end, this supernatural horror movie will you have checking for monsters under your bed.

5. 'It Follows'

David Robert Mitchell's 2014 horror film, It Follows, made headlines when it was released in theaters. The movie follows a young group of friends and the main character, Jay. Jay sleeps with Hugh and then everything goes to hell.

Hugh explains to Jay that she will now see people following her and that she must not let them catch her or she will die.

Jay and her group of friends try to find a way to kill whatever is after her.

It has been said that this film was meant to reference HIV/AIDS, which can potentially be a real-life horror.

The it that follows Jay around is visible only to her and the viewers.

6. 'Get Out'

Jordan Peele was already widely known for his comedy show Key & Peele. But he reached a new level of fame when his 2017 film Get Out was released. Not only is it a great horror film, but it also focuses on modern-day racism in America.

The movie follows Chris, a young black man, who is nervous to spend the weekend with his white girlfriend's family. When they arrive at their house, Chris notices that something seems off about them, and boy is he right!

Peele's film touches on a number of relevant social topics as well as dabbles into a bit of his comedic side. Get Out is a film almost anyone can enjoy.

7. 'Mama'

Dead moms are scary, right?

Mama follows the story of two young girls who are abandoned in the woods and raised by a spirit only known as "Mama". Eventually, the sisters are rescued and sent to live with their uncle and his girlfriend, neither of whom quite know how to care for these girls.

It quickly becomes evident that something or someone was keeping these girls alive during their stay in the forest. But now that Mama is attached to these girls, she isn't so willing to let go.

8. 'The Conjuring'

The Conjuring tells the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), paranormal investigators who are looking into some strange events in the Perron home. Shortly after moving into to their new home, the Perrons and their daughters realize that something paranormal is happening, and thus they reach out to Ed and Lorraine.

This 2013 horror film is great for anyone who is new to the horror genre and is the first installment in "The Conjuring Universe". There are four loosely related sequels in this universe that explore all different avenues of the horror genre and offer something for everyone.

9. 'Clown'

The premise for this movie almost sounds like a joke. A father puts on a clown costume that he finds in the basement of a home he is trying to sell in order to preform at his son's birthday party when the regular clown cancels at the last minute. But there's only one problem; he can't get the costume off.

If you're genuinely afraid of clowns, watch with caution!

This movie was actually filmed in 2012 but wasn't released in the United States until 2016. Produced by horror legend Eli Roth, Clown is a film that can scare even those who aren't afraid of clowns.

10. 'Rosemary's Baby'

Roman Polanski's 1968 film Rosemary's Baby is another classic horror movie on this list. This film follows a young wife named Rosemary who moves into an apartment in the city with her husband, Guy.

She gets pregnant and begins to experience strange symptoms. Her neighbors, the Castevets, encourage her to drink herbal medicine in order to relieve her from her suffering.

Polanski's film does an amazing job at keeping the viewer in suspense with this slow-building horror film. This film deals with demonic entities and satanic practices.

An old-y but a good-y, Rosemary's Baby definitely deserves to be on this list.
